Congrats on the 10D! My first real digital camera. I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I have a battery grip and Kirk L-plate that can be had at very reasonable price. PM if interested.

Hello Grady,

Nice Camera, I still have mine too.
But to answer your question, as far as I remember, when shooting raw, the cameras always include the jpg.
There is no way to shoot only raw format.
The jpg is embedded in the raw file.
The canon software reads the jpg out of the file.
So you only will see a single file when you shoot raw and jpg.
As far as I remember, the picture on the (camera) monitor is this jpg not the raw.

Enjoy and always good light

Using DPP and Zoombrowser

When you shoot RAW + JPEG (which I don't do anymore - I only shoot RAW) you have your choice in the software to display either both images or just the RAW image.

BTW: The 10D is a neat and capable camera. I will keep mine forever as a back-up or for third camera use... It is a touch slower than the newer DSLR camera and cannot use EFS lenses but, otherwise it produces great imagery.

The 10D cannot shoot RAW+JPEG the way later cameras do.

You have to choose either RAW (CRW) or JPEG files produced in camera. You cannot do both.

This was one of the key reasons I had to update from my great little 10D to 30D a few years ago.

Yes, there is a small JPEG embedded in the RAW file. There has to be for the camera to give you a review image on the LCD screen (no camera can display a RAW file directly). But it's just a small file.

Any recent version of Canon Zoombrowser can display your images as thumbnails. Any version of Canon Digital Photo Professional (often refered to as DPP) can process your RAW file and convert it to a TIFF or a JPEG or whatever you wish. You can download these softwares from Canon's website for free.

Another route, older versions of Photoshop (CS2, CS3) and their related versions of Adobe Camera Raw can handle CRW files quite easily. (As well as the 12 bit CR2 files from 20D and 30D... You don't need the more recent versions of CS4 and ACR until the 14 bit files of the 40D and later.)

AFAIK, if you are using Windows version with Media Center (such as Vista Premium), you can also download a RAW codec file from Canon website that makes it possible to view those RAW files within Windows. I know you can do this with all the recent cameras.... just not sure if they still support the older CRW files in the same way. You can't convert the RAW files with anything in Windows, just view thumbnails from them. It's handy for cataloging files.

I have Zoombrowser and DPP AND I also have Adobe Photoshop CS4. The 10D book states I can shoot raw+jpeg simultaneously, but I have to download the driver from the canon website which I havent done yet. But anyway I decided just to shoot raw when Im trying to be creative and shoot jpeg when doing family things. and i just wont worry about that anymore.
Thanks for the responses
Grady

I got a 10D a few weeks back too and I came across exactly the same situation as yourself. The camera obviously does shoot RAW + Jpeg but I have no idea where it stores the Jpeg. I think it is embedded in the RAW file but you can't extract it using the DPP or Raw Image Task without converting and saving the RAW file as a Jpeg.

Can anybody else help on this one as it is a lot of hassle to convert and save as Jpeg if it can't be easily extracted from the RAW file?

As I mentioned earlier, it appears that only the 20D and later models create separate JPEG and RAW files. The only solution is to upgrade to a 20D or better or start using Lightroom 2 to convert the RAWs.

Well there is a custom fn. for raw+jpeg to shoot, but you need the drivers for the 10D for the files to show up when you download pics to your computer. I just decided to shoot raw when Im trying to be creative or want full-control of the image. And just shoot jpeg at family events. Thats my 2 cents. I have photoshop cs4 and digital photoshop professional too.

Thanks for your answers. I found on the following page http://www.dpreview.com …ws/CanonEOS10D/page15.asp (external link) in the section Canon File Viewer Utility 1.2 that it was possible to "Extract and save embedded JPEG from RAW file" using the File Viewer Utility. Obviously that isn't a part of Zoombrowser anymore. I think I have it installed on my old computer so may try it out when I get some time.

Okay I figured it out. I installed the File Viewer Utility from the software disk that came with my 10D. This has the option in the File menu to extract and save the Jpeg but it wouldn't let me select it on my Vista OS PC (it was grayed out in the menu). So I then installed a program called Viewer Utility which was the replacement for File Viewer Utility. This lets me extract and save the Jpeg!

You can download Viewer Utility from here but you need to install File Viewer Utility first to be able to upgrade to it:
