The girls took on the top team in the area, that's only lost 3 matches this season and non in the 'conference' this season. They took the first game pretty handily then lost 3 straight close games to drop the match.

Really crappy gym with tall ceilings .. lots of fluorescent lights brightened it some but the old floor absorbed a lot of light. I couldn't shoot faster than 1/500 in there even at ISO 3200.

For whatever reason I ended up with more hand on ball blocks than I usually get.. I tend to not get the ball until it's just past the defender more often than not. Volleyball playoffs come next week so they could get a rematch.

I was looking at all of the pics again and just noticed, these look flashed in the background but that's actually the walls of that gym.. crazy design with 4 inch squares all over the walls.. still better than the community college but one dark gym.

Excuse my noobness but why were you not able to shoot faster than 1/500?

There's only so much ambient light in any given room that you can use for exposure.

Once you max your ISO and max your lens aperture wide open, then shutter speed becomes limited.

I like to use shutter speeds of 1/1000" for sports, but if you're in a low light environment, then 1/500" captures twice as much light (one f/stop) as 1/1000".

The OP was shooting 1/500", f/2.8, and ISO 3200 for proper exposure.

If he wanted to maintain the same exposure, in order to shoot 1-stop faster in shutter speed (1/1000" instead of 1/500") then he'd need either a lens that can do f/2.0 [Instead of f/2.8] or bump the ISO from 3200 to 6400. Or add more light (strobes).

Yep it's a line cover or sleeve, when I look at it it does look like a lens, I never noticed, and most of the schools don't have that cover, the CC actually puts towels there instead also.

I had never been to that gym and was wishing I'd had my flash but I don't usually only bring the flash to high school football.

I like those photos. Shooting volleyball indoors is tuff with limited gear. I tried my hand at it a couple months ago at a college game and I was only able to get 1/500 max with my 100mm f2.8 at iso 1600. I think on my 70-200 f4 I could only get 1/320. Tough to shoot but when you take a few hundred photos some are bound to be good enough.

If you could get 1/500 at ISO 1600 it's time for a camera with ISO 3200 you could probably get 1/800? I'm not up all on the conversions but if I were to shoot the nationally ranked D2 team in the area I am positive i could shoot at 1/800 or maybe even 1/1000 in the bright gym. I'm going to try basketball there this year if I get the OK to post pictures to my website.

I almost forgot.. my continued lack of success shooting the libero because 99% of the shots I get are eyes closed shots..

I did get 1 with eyes open .. I believe the 2nd or 3rd time I've managed to get one, the next also show the crappy floor that doesn't reflect the lights enough to shoot a higher SS
