Get the Beta and see if you like it. Might as well use it as its free, then upgrade later.

Just as long as you know LR 3 is in beta so you are playing Russian Roulette with your images as things can go wrong. With that said I've been using it steadily since it was available on 1000+ image jobs and all seems to be good. So yea just use the beta for now and save your money for the real thing.

A couple of points. Firstly, you don't know what the price of LR3 will be when it's released. Second, the price of the upgrade from 2 to 3 will certainly be less than the full version of 3 - so why not buy version 2 now and upgrade when the time comes? That way, you'll have the benefits of LR immediately. You could, as you say, download LR3 Beta and use it until the full version is released but I believe that it is not recommended that you should use it as your main program - it is, after all , a beta version.

I LOVE that it shows the sharpening at screen size (instead of zooming to 100%). Before I never really knew what it was going to look like until exported.

If you make a 1:1 preview in LR2, it will show sharpening at screen size in the Library module...

The thing is, there is no student discounts for upgrades. There is only the $100 full version in LR2's case.

So essentially, I could pay for the student version now for LR2 and pay the NORMAL price for the upgrade when LR3 is released. Or I could forgo LR2 altogether and pay for the student discounted version of full LR3 whenever it comes out..

With the second option, I would use LR3 as my "main" program and DPP as a secondary, or back up. I still have 11 or so days until my LR2 trial expires to figure it out, but thank you for your input! I'll keep reading and hopefully more people with chime in to help with this decision.

When will we see Luminance slider come into play though.. I want to try it..

Noise Reduction for me is nothing impressive at all. Noise Ninja is still light years ahead.

Agree on Noise Ninja.:D

Tim I don't want to rain on the LR2 parade, but you should be aware that compatibility between the LR3 Beta and the final release of LR3 is not guaranteed, and by the same token there is not compatibility between LR3 Beta and LR2, It's suggested that you only work with LR3B in a "testing mode'. I'd say that if you are doing a volume of work and your editing needs to be preserved, the safest route is to spend the $100 on LR2. I'm not sure if Adobe has this policy, but some companies will actually upgrade an app for free if you bought to previous version in a window of time just prior to the release of the new release -- you might check that out.

Betas are usually slower than the final release as there's extra developers' code that will eventually be deleted.

System.out.println("Inside sharpenPhoto()\n");

Turns out they allow a 30 day time frame for upgrades; Meaning, if I bought LR2 today, and LR3 was released within 30 days, I would be able to upgrade for free. Too bad LR3 isn't going to be released within this month..

Well, if it was me and I oculd afford the $100 now, I'd probably go for LR2 now. LR3 has a few improvements over LR2, but the biggest advantages of LR over DPP are in LR2, IMO. It'll take a bit for LR3 to stabilize as well. Typically it takes one or even two upgrades to stabilize a release, which means about 6 months after the first release LR3.2 should come out (three month cycle for minor upgrade releases).

In the meantime you have the full use of LR2 from now 'till you are ready to spring another $100 for LR3. And, at $200 total, you are still paying less than those of us without a student discount!

I know the LR3 is beta, but here is some questions:

1. I cannot see previews when my camera connected directly to PC via USB

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2628/4179420651_2c9cd6cb99.jpg
IMAGE LINK: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gbaturin/4179420651/ (external link)
They are imporeted ok, but no previews. Do you know why?

2. I like exporting to FLICKR directly, but if the photo is replaced, the link is no good any more.
If I posted something into POTN, and then updated my photo - all you can see is this:
IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Redirected to error image by FLICKR

I would probably have to cancel to post the updates.

3. In Library in Survey mode, if I hi-light one photo and enter "1" - then ALL selected photos are rated. In LR 2.5 only hi-lighted photo.
Do you know how to rate just one, and not all in Survey mode?

That's a camera driver issue.

Double check that, and if it still happens, report it, as that sounds like a bug.

I've just checked, and that doesn't happen with mine.

.

Anytime I do changes in already published photo, it is up to be updated. This is the same as "replace" function in Flickr. Once it's updated, the Flickr gives to it the new file name and all old links are no good.
