Which is why it won't do the "play nicely with networks" thing, apparently.

Interesting. What do you mean? :)

From what I understand, SQLite is not "network aware", so you can't have multiple users working in it at one time, thus no network usage of LR. Which is annoying - it would make it SO much nicer to use if you could do stuff on the laptop, and come back to the office, let it find the network and just update the LR database...

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

There is a more fundamental problem -- LR is not programmed for multiple use. In fact, it is prevented by putting a "lock" file in its caltalog folder, which means only one person can access the catalog at a time.

The only way to get around this is to have the different users maintaining their own catalog. You can of course share edits by saving the metadata to a sidecar file, but each person who does an edit will overwrite the prior file, so it can get messy.

You can, though, access a catalog from different computers using, say, an external drive. I'm not sure about the various types of networked drives, though. I have a networked hard drive that is unplugged most of the time that I use for backups -- it is attached to a router. I'll have to mess around with it some day to see if it is "visible" to LR.

Photoshop has an enterprise software that will enable people to collaborate, but it's not built in to CS4. I don't know if LR will ever see the day...maybe:)?

Right! I've heard that the MySQL database supports multiple users, but of course it would require programming it into Lightroom. In fact, I'm not sure if I'd want people simultaneously trying to edit my pictures at the same time I am...

Yeah as mickey mentioned though, LR uses SQLite which does not support record locking and many other features of a full SQL implementation

Edit: Sorry I misread your comment. I suppose they could use MySQL with a great deal of re-programming ;)

And whilst do-able, don't forget the licensing for MySQL is comparatively expensive, which could also hit the program cost.

Good point:)! There could be a Lightroom Enterprise in the future that would charge a fair amount for such things, but I wonder how much of a demand there would be?

I have switched over from LR2 to the new Beta version. Still trying it out but I like it so far.

A question for you LR experts. When I am in development mode; what is the best way to scroll through "Presets" with out manually clicking each one>

Thx

Oh Hai!

If you have the Presets panel visible and make sure tha Navigator panel above it is open (it shows a preview of the image) just glide the mouse over the various presets and the Navigator preview will reflect those presets. The main view won't, of course, unless you click the preset, then undo it by either clicking below it or do a Ctl-Z (Edit/Undo).

hahah hey tonylong.. thx for the tip. I resized my preview pane so now it is much better when I glide the cursor over the presets.

To add to tonylong's tip... if you have a scroll wheel on your mouse just hover above a preset and move the scroll wheel up and down.

What about Noise Reduction. Why can't Adobe put in a Noise Reduction as good as the plug ins, so we don't have to do that extra step.

I would love to see this included in LR3, and would pay more for it.

LR3 NR is suppose to be on par with third party plug-ins, we will see when luminance support is released, but the rumor is it will be as good as say noise ninja and it will be non-destructive.

Hmmm,
Beta expires on April 10. Any rumors of LR 3 release date?
Has there been any updates to the beta? meaning a second beta release? I tried the beta when it first came out but found it much slower than LR 2, so I've stopped using it for a long time now.
