I'm sorry about the quality of the screen shot (I'll try and do a better one) but the last box you can see at the bottom is the initial previews box.

Roy (and René), it appears you have the file handling set at "Copy photos to a new location..." as well as importing from a memory card, hence the extra lines in the box.

As a test, first copy the images from memory card to a local folder you plan on using for storage. Then import and change the file handling method to "Add photos to catalog without moving." Then you can try resizing the window (either from top or bottom) to see if the bottom half shows up.

Ken - you're a genius! I tried what you suggest and bingo! I can now see the whole box - and the thumbnail/preview pane. Thanks for all your help (and perseverence).
