Hey guys,
I am finding some used 300 2.8L Non-IS's for around $2000. Are they truly worth that much over, say a newer 300 4L IS? The difference is about 1k as you probably know but is it worth the extra stop and taking out IS?

Thanks for the examples Jay, got a few questions. How do you find the AF with the 2x and would you spend the extra $1000 for the f2.8 over the f4 IS? Again this is NON-IS we're talkin about.

*and the B-17 wasn't sharp enough lol

from what I have seen/heard/used... the af doesnt slow down nearly at all.. however that is based off of my own examination...

AF with the 2X rarely misses. This one happens to be with a 5D Classic:

I would want the f/2.8 version simply because I'd prefer to be able to do 600mm @ f/5.6 instead of f/8 (which is the AF limit on a non 1-series body...)

As for IS, I don't actually use it as much as you might think because I'm often tracking things on a diagonal (climbing and descending) and even Mode 2 IS can screw that up.

Ah okay. Thanks for the clarification on the part about not focusing with a non 1-series.
