They are actually fairly common, and the adult form is large AND beautiful. It looks like you might have the 5th instar, and if you happened to put it in a jar with oak or maple leaves, you may get to see it pupate. Elizabeth

Sorry I thought the two links were different and went to the specific larvae, Ist one was for the Polyphemus moth, which is my coice but each individual can look somewhat different and it looks close to the Luna, but I do think it is the Polyphemus moth, agreeing with the other two, nice shot irregardless!!
