Generally, I've always considered we make our own luck when it comes to taking photographs, but every so often lady luck does intervene.

In this instance, I'd seen a possible scene, the young couple chatting , obviously engrossed in each other, and were quite happy for me to snap away.

I'd considered a shot, using their interaction as the subject, and as the train was building up steam, I wanted to use the swirling steam as a backdrop to give a 'Brief Encounter' feel to the image.

As is normal at these kind of situations, there was loads of people milling around, particular one dipstick in a red kagoule hovering (constantly) in frame, totally oblivious to anything going on (a train spotter perhaps).

A (female) train guard saw what I was trying to achieve, and moved all the folk away from the train for a minute, enabling me to capture the shot, was I grateful-you bet

Nice indeed. And cooperation from an official? You KNOW it was your lucky day! Goodonya for making the most of it.

Love to see that shot in B&W with a little grain to make it look 1940ish. Great capture.

Love these! I love the story they tell. Did you have a chance to talk to them & maybe offer them a print?

Agree. the first shot is 'money.' Very well done. The soldier looks like a very young George Harrison as well.

Most excellent series....

When I looked at the last shot, it would have been killer if they were both looking at each other as the train pulled away.....but, the photog only has so much control in candid situations...

Well done!

yea, I know, it would have been great if I could have done, but the very kind lady train guard only gave me around a minute to be able to get these shots (which I was ever so grateful for), and all the folk that had been held back were soon floating around in the frame :(
