Got the basics down .... just need expertise info on how to increase shutter speed with a flash.

Shooting with a 5D Mark II and a 580EX II Flash.

What steps do I have to do to get a shutter speed higher than 1/250th sec?

Thanks

The main thing to remember is that you lose power when you raise the shutter speed with HSS.

Now try and figure out how to get the 580EX2 into slave mode without reading the manual... that is a real trick.

I'll cross the bridge of "slaves" when I get there. ... if ever. Information overload is the enemy ... i.e. the owners manual instead of a forum.

Can loss of power in HSS be compensated for with a Better Beamer?

If you're shooting night football there should be no reason to get the shutter over 1/250th. I'd recommend against HSS in this case.

What lens are you going to shoot with?

You lose ambient with HSS and get that "Black hole" effect  looks like crap. Just set shutter at 1/250 sec. Have you tried ISO 3200 or 6400 on the 5D MK II ? If you can get by with it it looks pretty darn good, much better than flashed (Take it easy guys, that's just my opinion ;)) 3200 @ 1/500 sec. has done the job for me at even the worst lit games and I'm using a 30/40D, yours should look MUCH better noise wise. Plus you can still get your 4 fps without waiting for the flash to recharge.

Dont use HSS... Getting the flash off camera will help

Learn to balance ambient and artificial to avoid ghosting, DONT use any tuperware crap to "diffuse" the flash.

Lastly, be prepared to be frustrated, especially if you have limited experience with artificial light. When done right flash avoides high ISO, gives a consistent color, retains more colors and gets light under the helmet.

1/250 shutter speed. ISO 1000, f/2.8 or 3.2, manual exposure. Shoot em up. The flash will take care of the rest. Last game I used the 100-400 with my 580 EX II on the 1D MK III.
Good luck.
