Has anyone had any experience with combining spiderlites (continuous) with off camera flash?

It's probably not the best idea. You want consistency in your light color temperatures. Maybe you could gel your flash to match the color temperature of the continuous light source? Strobe lights will likely overpower the continuous light source even on low power settings. You may be able to find a decent balance with experimentation. All in all, it will present a series of issues that will need to be worked out (if they can be).

I'm sure there are people around here who have done it with success. Maybe they will chime in and offer some advice. For me, using all strobes is enough of a challenge on its own. :)

You won't have to gel the flash if you are using Daylight Balanced Fluorescent Bulbs.

You'll need to gel the flash if using it with the Tungsten bulbs they sale.

I would go with the 5000K daylight. There would be a variance, but I'm not sure if it's any more significant than the same variance you get between small flash and price point monolights.

Combining light sources is a recipe for frustration.

Besides, you'll need extremely slow shutter speeds to get the most powerful continuous lights to compete with even a weak flash.

I have seen several video demonstrations of the Spiderlites. In every case, the photog used a tripod and had a cooperative subject who could sit still. They have their advantages, but they're expensive and have some severe limitations.

I agree with Curtis. Mixing continuous with strobes isn't a great idea and finding a balance for the continuous contribution as well as a white balance is going to more trouble than it's worth.

I've seen some great work done with Spiderlite's but that was with a 3 or 4 light kit.
