Nice shots, well done. I hate zoo shots that are obviously zoo shots. (ie. fences/bars in the background, collars/halters/tags on the animals etc.) Love the baby in the tree.

I love the Red Panda, in the Tree. Definitely a Wall Hanger. Also liking the Lighting on the Tiger. I gotta get to the Detroit Zoo, sometime. Just a shame its 400 miles away :(

Ha, nah, it's really not worth it. I REALLY had to earn these shots, I've been to several other zoos that have been much more enjoyable overall.

Thanks, very much so agree, my goal with ALL my zoo shots is to make it look like they weren't in captivity. (There's one pole in the rhino shot, but easily edited out if necessary and not too obvious)

Of course, this obviously results in a good bit of tight crops, but so be it, it still works! I won't be seeing any of these guys in the wild ever likely!

Loved the shots.

Do you reckon the 70-200 a better bet for zoo photos than the 100-400?

Well I think I can pretty confidently say that all my pictures I take at zoos are 100mm or greater, and lots of times I wish I had more, so I definitely think that focal length would be ideal, but of course you'd have to give up the 2.8, a personal preference.

Oh yea, they're in direct competition with penguins for my favourite animal, and I think they just edge them out :P

Too bad Detroit has possible THE WORST penguin exhibit on the planet.

Interesting...

The Penguinarium was "cutting edge" when it first opened.

I sincerely doubt that having water and a chilled environment ranks as the "worst penguin exhibit on the planet."

Up until this year, the Blackfooted Penguins at the Wildlife World Zoo NW of Phoenix lived outdoors!

ZING!

As an "exhibit" it absolutely is the worst, the entirely unmaintained glass is so yellowed, and approaching opaque you can barely see the animals, not to mention their activity level in this environment is the lowest I've yet seen. In addition to the complete lack of lighting.

Some from my favourite exhibit, in Seattle;

Very nice shots, especially the panda shots. Did you use the Bazooka for most of these?

It was 70-200 2.8 all day long!!!

Although as that other person brought up, a 100-400 would likely be useful too.
