Manfrotto Ballhead Quesiton

Just got my first ballhead, used on ebay today. I don't have a tripod yet to test it but I noticed on the bottom if you press it, the ball locks up. I don't know how you can use it on a tripod then. Maybe I'm missing a concept here. Thanks for your help.

Not sure I understand what you mean? Press it on the bottom how?

What model is it

486RC2. I just press the base of the ballhead where the screw goes in and the ball locks up without twisting the knob.

The way the 486 is designed turning the locking lever forces the alloy base up to the ball. So you sound as though you are imitating its natural behavior. You cannot get to the base once it's attached to either a monpod or tripod.

Bolt it to a piece of plywood or chipboard and test it out if you are concerned.
