Sorry to say it mate, but IMHO sometimes a flash is essential if you want to get a photo of something that won't happen again. Fill flash is also useful. If I had to choose between giving up one of my lenses and giving up my 550EX, i'd give up a lens. Professional wedding photographer, solution architect and general technical guy with multiple Amazon Web Services certifications.

Then again some great photographers have worked with a single lens and no flash for their entire lives, and make great photos. I got a book from the library of a guy who'd taken photos of many, many famous photos using no flash, all black and white. His tricks were to use stairwells, and to carry a 200W bulb in his pocket for times where there really wasn't enough light around. I have seriously considered the lightbulb thing!

Check out this site, i saw a presentation she gave and she has some great photos, not a flash in sight.
