I ran across this thread on dpreview (on the day that my 7D arrived in the mail, naturally ): http://forums.dpreview.com …29&thread=33347975&page=1 (external link)

It seems some 7D users are experiencing ghost images when shooting at a fast frame rate.

Has anyone experienced this? Something to be concerned about?

Edit by Jon:
Canon has published this (external link) acknowledging the issue.

Did you look at what he need to do to even vaguely see it?

Whether it's an artifact of the mechanics or the processing, if you don't see it in the kinds of shots you take, you shouldn't worry.

I think I need to stay away from dpreview.

As soon as I saw the link to preview, I knew what it was going to be.

Nothing wrong with doing all of that - it's interesting to know the under the hood stuff, but do not get alarmed about it.

I remember when I got my 40D, there was this crazy talk about laddering of the histogram in non even iso-steps. it got me worried at first, but in the end whether it did it or not, no-one ever noticed, including me, so it didn't matter one bit.

7D ghosting

Anyone been affected by this? Seems like the CMOS in the 7D isn't clearing optimally.

Found this on Fred Miranda forums: http://www.canon.com.au …1685&productID=eos7d_body (external link)

Looks like Canon confirms the problem.

oh man, even in the second "enhanced" image I had to tilt my monitor at just the right angle to see it. Is it a bad thing: well yeah, but they are working on it. Is it a big deal: I'm going to go with no.

You'd think silly stuff like that would be worked out of the design by the time it hits the market.

You would think. But then there were the black dots for the 5d2 and eventually they provided a firmware fix. It's just a matter of time.

Not to mention the mirror falling off on a 5D classic.

I'm actually a bit worried about this one. The speed at which the CMOS clears is very much related to hardware, and I can't imagine why Canon would have purposely gimped the chip to clear slower than optimum. Equivalently, I can't see how a firmware update would help much. If this thing blows up, it could very well be a recall.

If it's a recall, it's on Canon. But what's the point of worrying at this juncture? They cleared the CMOS on the 1d3 to get 10fps. That's 2 frames faster. We don't know about whether 1d4 exhibits any similar issues to the 7d (though it would be a good bet someone with a test version is out there trying to duplicate the ghosting issue).

At this time, it's the BiF and action (those whose livelihood depends on 8fps) that are the ones most affected. I'd imagine the 98+ % of us that don't machine gun this will never see it as a problem.

Give it some time, let their techs figure it out.
