1000's post and a dumb-ass question... I have had a dSLR for years now, but have been toying with the idea of getting Leica M8 and now M9. G11 being having a viewfinder might be an interesting choice for discrete photography. I'm curious what's the fps for a regular photography (not video).

Thank you, Chancellor.

considering an M8/9 or.... a G11?!? wow.

forget where I read this, but iirc, it was something along the lines of 1.1fps; extremely slow. *edit* found a good chart

but c'mon, if you're considering an $8,000 camera and have the means, I don't see why you'd buy a $500 camera that is inferior in almost every way. and you simply cannot compare the viewfinder in a G-series camera to a DSLR or a Leica. It's so small and IMO hard to use unless I absolutely had to. I know people use it, but looking through my 5D2 or 30D's viewfinders, then looking in the G11's simply makes my eyes hurt.

If you can afford the better cameras then your going to be much happier with their viewfinders. Good luck;)

Thank you both. I completely understand the point of "if you can afford the better one...", but for me it was the self justification of "will I use it enough". I have a 5D MkII with 85 pretty much attached to it and I love it, so I was thinking about getting a smaller camera to keep it in a pocket, but I really wanted one with a viewfinder. Those were my thoughts.

Matt, thanks for the chart - it makes it clear.

IMO the G11 viewfinder is next to useless. I would not buy the G11 for it's viewfinder that's for sure.

Ya, viewfinder on it is "usable" at best.

Reminds me of the viewfinders on disposable cameras. LOL.

You'll most likely be disappointed... especially coming from a 5D II.

it shoots slow. slower than my previous crap cameras. That said, I am much more pleased with the quality of the G11 than the quantity of my other PnS cameras.

Thank you all. The main reason I was going for it was the viewfinder, so I told my honey that the Christmas presents list is getting altered - G11 off the list.

Everyone is bashing the viewfinder...... but .... it comes in handy for the street photographer.... who does not mind shooting a bit loose.... it is good in normal distances..... what you see will be in and a little more....I shot a wedding this weekend & the preist told me AS THE PRO no photos.... but allowed the guests to shoot.... so I put my D3 down & descretely shot as an amatuer with much better results... back screen turned around & all I did was look at the viewfinder.... shot raw .....

You sneaky bastard. Did you put on a fake mustache too? :D

I have no real quarrel with the viewfinder - but I can't tell if anything is adjusted properly when looking through it - it's basically only good for quick mode.

I bought the G11 as a "poor man's" Leica. Its small and silent, and that's all I needed for street and other people oriented stuff. I use the viewfinder all the time, it has pretty good parallax correction so what is in the center of the VF is usually in the center of the frame, you just don't get to see all the edges. Whatever. We all know how amazing it would be to own an M9, but 90% of people can't or won't purchase one. The best camera in the world is the one that's with you, and the G11 doesn't leave my side. It's a great complement to my SLRs.

I have the G7 and I use the viewfinder as a close approximation of what the shot will look like. I frame the main subject dead center with some slop on both sides/top and bottom. The LCD screen gives you what you will shoot but being old school I like the viewfinder.

When you really get down to it there isn't really another game in town and with all the heavy iron you have an extra $500 bucks isn't going to break the bank. You will carry it more then you think and I use it as an extra lens/body when I don't want to drag around a backpack full of gear or an extra body with lens banging on my side. The shutter lag just drives me batty though. You just have to remember it isn't a 5D Mark II.
