Sell my XSI or 40d?

So because I need some money for other things one of my camera bodies has to go. So any thoughts on whether I should sell the XSI or the 40D? Both are in excellent condition. I love both cameras and know the 40d is thought to be the better camera but I just don't know if I use its advantages over the XSI. for instance I've never found a need for the higher fps on the 40d. Also while the build on the 40d is nicer I don't really put my camera in a position for it to need to be rugged. I know the 40d has a better af system as well but in what instances would this be helpful to me? Sorry I'm kind of just thinking out loud. Any thoughts?

Sell the one you'd get the most for....a year or two down the road, if you want it back, you'll get it for a lot less....

Definitely a good point. I had the xsi first and really never felt held back by it. I read a lot of threads on here about how the 40d was such a better camera so I decided I wanted to pick one up. I appreciate how nicely built the 40d is but my xsi has never had any problems. The only reason I see the 40d as superior is the af system but I don't know how much that actually helps me. I feel like I kind of bought the 40d to jump on the bandwagon with those who say its on a different level compared to the xsi. So any other thoughts to help me?

My 2.5 year trail of EOS bodies goes from D30 to 10D (after 2 months) to 30D (a year later when the 40D came out and drove down the close-out price of the 30D) +XT (pawnshop find) to 30D + 40D (another pawnshop find)....
...when I got the 40D I had to decide whether to part with the 30D or XT....my decision was made the day I looked through the VF of the XSI...sooooo much better than the XT that if I wanted a Rebel again I'd get the XSI...it also fits in my hands (much more like the XT) and much better than the XTI ....it's a VERY nice body...
The only reason for keeping the 40D is the MF screen option which I use all the time with my MF Nikkors...

The problem should I go with selling/re-buying one of mine is that the 30D value has dropped quite a bit, (though truth be told, not much less than what I paid for it)...and the 40D has in the eyes of many people (rightly or wrongly) better IQ than the 50D which has kept up the value of the 40D....good for you if you decide to sell it rather than the XSI...
Probably not much help...sorry...

I'm glad that someone else is having the same dillema. Everytime I see a 40D going cheap I almost buy it. Then I ask myself. "What will the 40D do that you XSi won't, besides weigh more?" I use the center AF point only, so the advanced AF does nothing for me. I'm not into shooting machinegun style so the FPS does nothing for me. The veiwfinder is not far from a 50D I checked out at best buy. I am comfortable manual focusing with it. If i go bigger it will be a FF to replace the film body, but I think I would still keep the Rebel.

sell the 40D if you don't earn $$ from photography.

Friz,
That was definitely what I was doing. I kept seeing used 40d's but I gave in to the upgrade bug eventually. Now that I have it I don't know if its an upgrade for me for what I do. It has some nice features but I getting along just fine with the xsi.

What exactly do you shoot primarily?

tfd888,
My favorite things to shoot are landscapes and my daughter. So potraits and landscape would account for about 95 percent of my shooting with some minor macro work here and there.

interesting thread - these usually go the other way..

I have an xsi and I was considering jumping to a 50d now that prices are coming down on them

my reason for changing would be the improved auto focus, and (hopefully) better high iso performance..
on the xsi I can use 800, but 1600 usually looks like crap at any large size, and I find myself needing it more and more

Whichever you can get more money from, if that's what your after, and don't see the point of having one over the other.

strange, every time I use 1600 ISO on my XSi (450D) I get good results, like this -

(shot at night with the cheap 55-250 !)

^^ That is not what I am seeing @ 1600 on mine.

From my amateur standpoint, the only two things I have felt my XSi lacks for me is....

1. I would like a usable ISO over 800.

2. Now that I have tasted a decent AF, I would like it even faster.
