There are so many variables I don't know where to start... thankfully you'll get 500 posts telling you all about how one is better than the other, or was it the other is better than the one...

Post number 1:

If you will NOT be purchasing new lenses then the current lenses you own will appear to have more of a given scene in them, that is to say they will seem to be wider now.

If you never properly sharpened your images with the 40D then images from the 5D I will appear sharper out of the camera.

The 5D I has better noise characteristics (assuming you don't get one that bands).

The 40D outer focus points are better than the 5D I. Use center point and recompose with the 5D I.

The larger viewfinder of the 5D makes it easier to manual focus if your using a focusing screen.

You will be applauded by a greater percentages of forum members that your now a real photographers if you get the 5D I.

The 5D I allows for easier DOF control.

Customers will never know which camera you used if you know what your doing. Get the 5D I for yourself.

A list of lenses you own would be helpful as some may not work on the 5D (EF-S)

Canon 40D and more lenses than my wife knows about...

Pretty much boils down to:

5D- better pure IQ, about 1 stop better high ISO thinner DOF, bigger viewfinder, can only use full frame lenses
40D- better and faster AF and faster continuous shooting, can use any lenses

ok, i got the 50mm f1.8 and canon 17-40 f/4L.

the main reason im asking is becuse i wish to get a 5dmkii once i have saved up some money and with the 40d being a 1.6 crop i would probably need to change a few lenses as i shoot on wideangle the majority of the time.

cheers, phil

Well, then I don't really see why you even asked? It seems obvious. Just get one.
