Gutted, my trusty 5Dm2 dies just as the mc called the couple for the first dance!
The first dance that could not be missed.
The first dance that the couple had rehearsed for weeks.
The first dance the groom had taken lessons for.

Gutted......looks like the shutter is fried. But at least i had my 30d to hand that saved the day.....now where is that repair centre.....

Yeah this is what backups are for. One of my 30Ds died a few minutes before the ceremony but fortunately it was only one of three (soon to be 4) bodies.

Good luck with the repair. Warranty, right? :)

Yeah, warranty still intact as its only 10 months old! There is less than 10,000 clicks on in so i am very disappointed. I am assuming its the shutter. The camera just would not fire and then when i got it working it gives a half black picture, like the shutter is stuck.

Sad day.

Go through the sensor cleaning thing. It'll pick up the mirror so you can see what's happening with your shutter. On my 30D, the blades basically just sat there and didn't move.

I had the same thing happen with my 5D after a cleaning from Canon, they repaired it at no cost, If I remember I think a screw or something came loose inside the camera's shutter assembly. (I think).

I moved this to talk as you don't have an image to share.

I always have my back up camera with lens ready on me just for this reason alone. I cannot be without some way to shoot an event happening so fast, there is nothing else to be done. I even take my P&S and leave that in my bag just in case. Thanks for telling this to us.

UPDATE:

The bloody thing is fine this morning.....flippin' tip top.
I thought, last night the shutter was stuck but now i am not so sure. Looking at the pics i am a little bemused.
If the shutter stuck then i would'nt expect to see any detail in the dark areas here would i ?

Did you flip off the HSS setting on your flash? (though why you would want HSS on indoors like that, I don't know... it just looks like some miscommunication with the flash)

Whenever you think you're having problems, it's time to run some controlled tests. Even if you decide to send it in for repair, having run tests will give you more information for the technicians as to when the problem occurs and when it doesn't.

Interested to know your shutter speed.

I am starting to lean that way in my thinking too. At the time i was working with the new Pocket wizards and had a Flextt5 on top with a 580exII mounted on that. It had not given me any issues all day.
Once i removed the PW it was still the same. But it does look like a sync problem doesn't it?

Shutter was 1/60
F2.8
Flash fired.
