Nice work Phil, 1,3 and 7 are my favorites. Not only have you gotten very good strobing this stuff, (which now I completely understand why you do) your timing is excellent as well. I cant even imagine catching that moment in #7 without rapid fire, nice job.

And it was really nice meeting you in person as well.

Bill,

It was fun to finally meet you in person. I'm sure we'll meet up again in the basketball season. See you then... ...

The shot in #7 was from the championship game of the tournament. Since it was the final game, the fans from the other schools had left and the north court was vacant, hence no fans in the background. Too bad because there was a good crowd behind the south court.

BTW, do you like the crop with the full reflection or is that just unnecessary?

I would say the first crop Phil. If the whole reflection was as clear as the part right under her it would work better. Good lighting you have this strobeing down pat.

Wow I would never have picked that these were strobed, is the team shot strobed too? What sort of set up do you have?

Ziv,
About how many do you have to trash from motion blur?

Nice shots Phil. Looks like you have the skin tones much improved. Did you figure something out at the gym or was that from lots of PP time?

I actually like the crop showing the full reflection. Maybe its because it's different or maybe its because I have been sorting through what seems like a million marginal ambient volleyball shots from a tourney Saturday and thought her skin tone, even in the reflection, was an improvement over what I have been reviewing. :-)

What does Sub State Champions mean? I have not heard that title before.

Nice job, Phil. I too am curious how you set up your lights. I've been noticing the high school gyms have hand rails on the end (or ends) but nothing in the middle of the stands to mount a clamp on to.

Strobes seem to a no-no around my part of the country. It's not a rule, but most coaches and players are accustomed to it and complain to the refs.

Rob and Mike,

Everything was strobed. The action, the team shot, everything.

The set up can be seen here:

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=760051

This day, there was a crowd so I moved the strobes a few steps higher to get them away from the student section but still on the side rails.

Dave

Zero. Motion blur doesn't happen. I make all manner of mistakes from focus error, poor composition, bad timing, and on and on and on; but never motion blur with the strobes. This day, I shot 232 images and 123 ended up on the web site. www.zivnuska.zenfolio.com (external link)
That is an unusually high keeper rate for me. Volleyball is tough and I'm just learning.

Thanks Kevin. I figured out the white balance in this gym, for my strobe set up, is 4300K from my last shoot. I've been shooting RAW indoors.

Last time, I screwed up and let myself get fooled by the histogram (dark background) and over exposed by 1/3 to 2/3 of a stop. The skin tones suffered when I reduced the exposure in post. This time, almost nothing was done in post to correct the skin tones because they were exposed properly in camera. Using a light meter, I walked the court and there was only a 1/3 stop variance across the court.

In Kansas, Sub-State refers to the tournament to gain entry to the state finals. This tournament had 8 teams competing and fortunately, our local team breezed through the competition.

Ryan,

The young lady in #6 is a sophomore and already a top player in Kansas. She is flat terrific! The best I've seen by a mile. When she snaps that wrist on a spike, it's coming!

I've seen her plant a spike in the sternum of a player in the back row and have the bounce almost come back across the net.

Amazing how much difference less than a full stop can make on skin tones isn't it? I have also been fooled by the histo and now use a light meter whenever I can. Again, nice work.

Congrats on winning the tourney. Hope the team does well and I look forward to hearing of their progress.

Just got the following from our AD. KSHSAA is the Kansas High School Athletic Association. I post it here FYI.
