She will have no trouble finding a home. I imagine that is part of the reason for the $600 adoption fee. I know we have had the fee discussion, and I TOTALLY understand why and how much it must cost rescues. There was some talk of how high the fees are here. I imagine part of that is the D.C. area has some very wealthy areas and LOTS of money. It is just not as opulent or flashy as say Beverly hills. There is also a fairly liberal socially conscious population who want to help by adopting dogs. Jon might know better but I bet a healthy good looking puppy doesn't last long in a shelter around here and can fetch a fair price to cover adoption costs. The government-run shelters tend to hang on to any doogs they think will adopt out easily; it helps their adoption numbers. The ones they're willing to relinquish to private rescue groups tend to be a) older, b) have health issues or c) have training issues. We have a variable fee structure; the younger females are most in demand, so they cost more. Older dogs and males cost progressively less, but we rely on donations, not the adoption fees, to keep us from running too far in the red. Adoption fees are nowhere near even close to covering medical expenses. cfpackerfan wrote in post #8945201 Even though Layla cost us almost $1000.00, her adoption fee was still $100. Sophie cost us about $500 after all her vet bills, and we still wouldn't imagine charging more than our usual $100 fee. I don't understand the rescues that normally charge between $100-$200 for an adoption fee, then to jack it up to $600 for a certain dog. This one's a 9 week old puppy - they probably did incur extra expenses and work getting her to that stage. And at 9 weeks old they'll be placing her before she's spayed, so the extra cost is also a degree of insurance that the adopters bring her back to get spayed. Jon

He was walking his dog and stopped by to chat. BearLeeAlive wrote in post #8946152 Yep, cold is always much more bearable if sunny, and not too windy too. Sunny is always better. I only use it for things like beef stew, and like you, I still finish it on the stove. I've completely changed my method of making mashed potatoes in the last few months. I used to cook them in a pressure cooker, run them through a ricer, then finish them up in the mixer. Now, I just cut them into cubes, boil them in a pan, drain when tender, and use an old-fashioned armstrong potato masher. It leaves just a few lumps which I actually prefer. I just did a batch today to serve with the leftover turkey. Lois says they were the best ever. Of course that was a gross exaggeration, but I never get tired of hearing it. ![]() That's about how I make them. I might run the hand mixer through them to smooth them a little....add some butter, milk, ranch dressing, pepper, seasoned salt....yum! short5 wrote in post #8945239 I think I have plantar fas...whatever that is called.
