TECHNICALLY THE 50MM 1.4 IS A BETTER LENS, BUT MANY WILL SAY IT'S NOT WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY.

BTW, IT'S CONSIDERED "YELLING" WHEN YOU TYPE IN ALL CAPS, so you may want to lose the caps lock when you type. It's nicer for us to read your posts.

Both will give you results as good as you are capable of getting....the 1.8 doesn't focus as well as the 1.4, and when shooting wide open the 1.4 has less depth of field/focus (and both have very little when shooting at F1.4-2), so it's up to you to get the most out of either lens...
You will find many posts with others' experiences and examples from both lenses here...
Good luck...and good shooting...

Look at the lens samples. Personally, I'd be tempted by the speed of the f1.4 for natural low lighting.
Both lenses need to be stopped down - it is really your call.

To start off, I would suggest checking out some sample shots on this forum, flickr, pixel peeper.
Decide your budget and if you really want/need the 50mm focal length. In my experience it's often too short for good portraits and too long for allround lowlight (indoor / party) prime.

Other popular options are the Canon 35mm F2 or Sigma 30mm 1.4. The ~30-35mm focal length will give you the equivalent of 50mm on full frame.

Some of my lenses focus beyond infinity...!

I use a 50mm f1.8 mk1 on a regular basis, I have also done 'full length' portraits with it. Attached to a 50D I got superb results! - Very happy!!

And the 50mm f1.8 mk2 has the same optics as the mk1, so you'll get the same quality with both.

Not bad at all, but not something that most any lens could not do, IMO.
