I have a 30D I purchased from B&H brand spanking new in Sept 06 that the shutter button has been failing to fire. After barking at my wife and accusing her of not knowing how to use the shutter button I have discovered it was the camera body all along. I shoot my sons basketball games and this is causing me a world of frustration as I am sitting there banging on the shutter button as it refuses to fire. Below are a few options I have come to after searching the forums, please offer any advice.

1. Attempt to open the camera based on the YouTube video and clean the shutter button. ( if screwed up, No option 3 or 4 )

2. Attempt to clean the shutter button with contact cleaner. ( if screwed up, No option 3 or 4 )

3. Send the camera into Canon for repair of the shutter button. ( I have no idea how much this this would cost, but 30D bodies are used 350-400$)

4. Send the camera in for repair but ask for the customer loyalty upgrade. ( I really like this option, but the 700 large is not in the budget this month or next, and who is to say that this problem wont resurface for me. I have found several 50D users with this problem, not as many but I am sure that has a lot to do with the amount of time the 50D has been available vs the 30D.

Your thoughts?

A repair of this nature is likely $250 from Canon - they tend to charge flat type rates for repair. You can get an estimate and see from there you would be out no more then shipping at this point.

Either way $250 won't buy you a 30/40/50D used.

I had the mirror box foam replaced on my 30D and it took them about 14 days.

How about option -1. Rocket blower or carefully use canned air to blow out any possible dustbunnies.

sounds like the plunger for the shutter release button is stuck/not working.
I had the same with my 30D and fortunately it was repaired under warranty.
