I'm thinking of picking up the wide angle converter for our A650 IS, I'll ask the question in here since it's shared by the G7 and G9 as well, and since the A650 IS is basically the G9's cheaper less optioned twin - and since I think I'm the only person that ever purchased this camera.

I'm fine with the heft I generally lug around SLRs but I wanted something to make the 650 a tick wider. I have the lensmate A650/G9 metal adapter.

Does the converter drop the aperture any effective amount? And if I set the camera to the converter in the menu can I still have some zoom function?

And do the images show much degrading from the standard 7mm (35mm setting?)

Thanks,

'No', it's not supposed to. Maybe on a cheap lens. You do have some extra 'glass' up front, but in the short time I've had/used it I see no effect on exposure range.

Re: "converter in the menu" -- that is just for IS algorithm.

Re: "pics degrading"... I think it is subjective. I find it a bit of a challenge to focus well manually with the lens adapters. Am still practicing. And so not all my wide-wide pics are sharp . I can get some very fine 25mme shots on a G9 w/.7x Raynox 540-line resolution. But I can also mess it up.

'Yes' you have use of zoom. However, zooming long is not very useable with Wide add-on. Conversely, std lens near full-wide is not useful with the Tele adapter on.

Look up lensmateonline.com for some G7 lens scenarios. Don't know where the 'WC-DC58B' fits in. '-C' matches the G9.[edit: I mis-spoke.] Yet some folks use Olympus or other makes with good results.

G9's... enthusiast and hobby clicker... toying w/ Canon 2x Tele & Raynox .7x Wide.

The WC-DC58B (external link) is designed for the G9 (my camera) and the A650, so no issues there. I use the lens on my G9, but not frequently, since it is rather large. I does provide me with a 26 - 159 mme zoom when attached, as it will on the A650. I have had no issues with lack of sharpness, or other degradation to image quality.

Here are some shots I taken with it.

Sunrise. No evidence of lens flare.

HDR. Notice it will show some curvature of the Earth, not really lens distortion, just fairly wide angle. There was a 30 knot wind this day, so tree leaves are a little blurred.

Good stuff guys, that's what I wanted to know. I have an ambition all of a sudden to play with P&S again - not sure why. I looked at picking up a G11 but I'm not sure it will deliver noticable results beyond what the A650IS/G9 can provide.

But the no place to grab zoom on the A650IS/G9 has always put me off. Attaching the lensmate and having the ability to go 26mm wide with f/2.8 sounds appealing. And I expect to shoot wide open at 26mm equiv. as above 200 ISO I really don't like the results so much.

Thanks again.
