I am just curious who all does NOT use a UV filter. I have read a couple of people against them, and then there are some who are for the expensive ones. I am getting ready to purchase the 24-70 2.8L... and when I rented it to play with it.. I did not use a filter. I used to always use a filter on my 35, but am reconsidering on using it for the new baby.

Discuss..

The only screw on filter I own is a CPL...

No desire to use UV filters.

I use UV filers. Very helpful, especially when your holding a $5k lens. Lets me concentrate on composition rather than on baby sitting my lens. If anything scratches the front, I just throw away the filer and continue on shooting. and accidents do happen!! no UV, no life!!

Ha..baby my $2000 lens is the last thing that I do. Not gonna spend that much on glass then put a window in front of it.

No UV filter here, have a CPL for some situations, but otherwise, never.

This could be a good poll...

When I got my first lens, my friend that got me into photography made me buy a UV filter with it too. I haven't since bought a filter as I think a lens hood does the job fine.

UV filter - never. Lens hood - always. Cap on when not shooting.

Me: Hi, what are you?
UV: Hi, I m a UV filer, put me on your lens so I can protect you.
Me: Oh ok, but will you degrade my IQ?
UV: No, that why you spent $100 on me so you can be safe while having fun
Me: Sounds good to me, but people on internet forums say that UV's are no fun.
UV: yeah, those are the same people that don't accept protection while sexing. Apparently it makes everything worse! that idea may have been relevant in 1610 but with modern technology and genetic engineering we can create safe and fun environment for photographers.
Me: ok, gotcha! can you show me a pic of yourself? I just wanna see how sexy you are.
UV: Oh sure, my pleasure.

I have one for each mm size I have (72, 77 and 82), but they never make it onto the lens unless I am shooting in an environment that warrants it (tons of sea spray, gale force winds in the desert, etc..) so pretty much once or twice a year.

I do have CPLs that I use, but again, not much.

I do try and use hoods when I am in the sun, but not always, depends on my mood.

I'm not much worried about these kinds of things, as I have insurance for that. I try not to do anything stupid, but life is too short to worry about coulda woulda and shoulda type stuff.

I certainly wouldn't use THAT kind of protection on my lens... may make a good dust filter though?
anyone tried that?
