I have nice Hoya s-hmc uv filters but rarely if ever use them. In case I don't want to use the hood to make my rig smaller or if I want to shoot in some gritty sandy type of setting, I have them.

I also carry an Olympus E 420 in my shoulder bag as a point and shoot and just use the filter instead of a hood or a lens cap. So maybe I do use it.

UV Filters, Always.

Have a few polarizers and ND grad filters but never use them.

I am SERIOUSLY amazed!!!

All of my lenses always have a UV...always. While shooting, in the bag, with the hood on....never take 'em off. I buy a new one every time a buy a lens and it's the first thing I do with my glass when I unbox it. I am truly amazed at all the folks here not using them. I have a decent array of CPL and ND filters, couple of specialties as well that I rarely use...but the UV is always there. I think my high school photography teacher mentioned that as his habit too (26 years ago:))...I've always done the same. I'll bet I have enough invested in UV filters to have purchased my 16-35l I've been lusting over:)

Wow!

If lenses were supposed to have permanent protective filters on the front, they'd be designed with them already attached.

Oh wait...they do. They're called the FRONT ELEMENT.

It's sort of time wasting discussion.

If you like using UV filters, use them.

If you don't, then don't.

  • No UV/Protective filter can improve image quality.
  • All UV/Protective filters will impair image quality.
  • With high-quality/high-cost filters that impairment is minimised, but not eliminated.
  • A 1mm thin piece of galss will not protect your front element from any impact energetic enough to damage that front element.
  • A 1mm thin piece of glass will protect your lens from grubby fingers, windblown sand or salt-spray and other such things.
  • .........But not as well as a lens-cap
  • With longer lenses a hood provides adequate protection and enhances image quality

I don't think anybody could argue with those facts (actually, I'm expecting people to disagree with all of them). Taking them into account - I use a UV filter when shooting in conditions where the wind can blow nasty stuff onto my lens. I never shoot near children or drunks. I always use a hood. I always use a lens-cap when not shooting.

CPL most of the time outdoors; UV for physical protection when hiking, harsh inclement weather - most of the time it's off though.

UV filter - never. Lens hood - always. Cap on when not shooting.

+1

Only time my UV filter ever gets on the camera is if im shooting in harsh conditions - sea spray, sandy/dusty conditions.

Otherwise the hood does a perfectly good job of protecting the lens while im shooting and the cap does the job when im not.

CPL on the otherhand gets used whenever i feel it will make a difference!

Never over here; the hood is enough.

I only use them if it's raining or I know I'm going to get dirty.

I only use a filter in bright sunlight or if I I am going to be outside in windy conditions. I do use a UV filter sometimes for those, but I always use a clear filter when needed. When I am indoors, no filter.

One of the worst conditions to use a UV/Clear filter.

I use UV filers. Very helpful, especially when your holding a $5k lens.

I'm trying to think... what $5K lens takes a screw-on UV filter?

No filters on my lenses.
