It was nice to watch the Yanks win last night, and the bubbly flying all over the place to top it off. Most if not all photographers had some sort of protection over their gear, but its obvious they're not completely protected. I'm curious to know how their gear functions after the party's over. Anyone have any experience in this?

Well, I have shot a couple of big celebration events...

2x Football Association Wales Cup Finals
1x European Challenge Cup Rugby Final
1x Friends Provident Trophy Cricket Final

These are the sort of shots...and I will tell you now, you get sticky. Very sticky and smelling of champagne.

Gear wise, it's a good idea to have a filter on the short lenses, it makes it much easier to clean...or just throw away.

The 1D series seems pretty good at coping with champagne but it will get a bit sticky. I use a slightly (and i mean very slight) damp chamois leather to clean off between the buttons afterwards and I'll take one with me to any finals that I attend...

Players do love spraying champagne towards any TV or stills cameras though, which usually means you'll be getting a soaking.

The bonus is that there's usually a couple of bottles left over at the end of the celebrations, and nicer guys will give them to the photographers as way of apology!

You definitely get sticky and wet in there - some leave with no significant damaged while I know one who sent their body in after and PS said the damage was like it was totally submerged (they were not so bright and had no protection). If protected good enough you usually have some mess on the glass that needs to be cleaned.

Wow, I've not been that badly hit before!! A lot of guys will turn away if it looks like they're about to get a faceful...not least that it doesnt give you the best shots!

I use a chamois to wipe down and have had to use Q-tips (cotton buds) to clean the buttons to stop them from sticking!

I did mention this person doesn't seem to bright, ha. I think they cared more about being in the celebration than doing the job of documenting it - OK, I'll be honest, I have NO clue how this person is the teams photog!

I had to wipe down the lens a little bit, do some immediate cleaning but nothing on the body/buttons which was just fine. Biggest problem in a locker room is the thing fogs up!

Gotta bust 'em Dave - just wondering what these shots have to do with the bubbly and gear conversation? Are they all piling on top of a big bottle shaking it up?

Haven't done anything like that so far, but I saw most of the pros using ThinkTank or Kata rain covers when shooting the end of the Twins - Tigers tie breaker. With a filter, this is probably the best way to go.

I thought maybe they only had one bottle to celebrate so it was a fight for who got to pop the top.

For some reason champagne celebrations are frowned upon at youth and high school sports. Only one I could find.

If I had time to prepare then I'd chuck a garbage bag over my gear, tape it to the hood and shoot in so the camera/lens can't get soaked :p

last year i shot a motorsports event and i used the same setup. it was a mess that night. several inches of mud everywhere. after the show, all i had to do was take the bag off and my camera and lens were completely dry.
