It was nice to watch the Yanks win last night, and the bubbly flying all over the place to top it off. Most if not all photographers had some sort of protection over their gear, but its obvious they're not completely protected. I'm curious to know how their gear functions after the party's over. Anyone have any experience in this?
Well, I have shot a couple of big celebration events...
2x Football Association Wales Cup Finals
1x European Challenge Cup Rugby Final
1x Friends Provident Trophy Cricket Final

These are the sort of shots...and I will tell you now, you get sticky. Very sticky and smelling of champagne.
Gear wise, it's a good idea to have a filter on the short lenses, it makes it much easier to clean...or just throw away.
The 1D series seems pretty good at coping with champagne but it will get a bit sticky. I use a slightly (and i mean very slight) damp chamois leather to clean off between the buttons afterwards and I'll take one with me to any finals that I attend...
Players do love spraying champagne towards any TV or stills cameras though, which usually means you'll be getting a soaking.
The bonus is that there's usually a couple of bottles left over at the end of the celebrations, and nicer guys will give them to the photographers as way of apology!
