Hi all. My hubby and I are currently visiting the GSMNP. We are heading home Thursday. Tomorrow is a 90% chance of rain. Any good places you can recommend to get photos while it's raining? We hate to lose a day due to rain but also don't want to be out in pouring rain (supposed to be heavy). Today we did the loop through Cade's Cove. Its beautiful but we didnt get to see much in the way of wildlife, a few deer and turkey. We hiked up to Laurel falls yesterday and got to see a bear about 30 feet away coming down the falls. Snapped a few shots and booked it out of there lol. Any good recommendations on other places to be sure we see during our visit? Any advice is appreciated!!
Thanks!!

If you're willing to come further into NC before trekking home to PA, Cataloochee. (external link) It's got some old structures that you can walk in... not a whole lot for a rainy day... There are elk there as well. The Occonaluftee Indian Village (external link) can be done in the rain... or at least *I* have gone in the rain. It is outdoors as well though.

Sorry I'm not much more help than that!

I don't know what you enjoy...but the Biltmore Estate and winery is a great way to kill a rainy day. www.biltmore.com (external link)

Thanks for the tips. We were really hoping to still get some photos even though its raining. Not to much around here thats not outdoors other than tourist traps lol. We are staying in Sevierville, near Gatlinburg. I have a feeling tomorrow is gonna end up being a wash for us, may just have to spend the day in the cabin taking pics from the deck lol

Cruise on over to the outlet malls...lots of artsy shooting ops there. Or if you are good with low light...you can shoot at the Ripley Aquarium.

I LOVE the park!!! I wish I was there now, even with the rain.

There are a lot of interesting places throughout the park, although I don't know if there are many photo opportunities to be had in the rain. Some of the places I like to visit are as follows:

  • Clingman's Dome
  • Mingus Mill
  • Cades Cove
  • Newfound Gap
  • Laurel Falls
  • Mingo Falls
  • Foothills Parkway Overlook
  • Gatlinburg Bypass Overlook
  • Elkmont Ghost Town

There are many more places to visit, but these are the ones that come to mind right now. I'll be going back to our cabin at the end of December, so I won't be able to visit Clingman's Dome this next time around because of the seasonal closure, but it's open now. If you haven't been there yet, it's worth a trip up to the observation tower. The best part about the park is that no matter which of the roads you take, there's always something new and interesting to discover.

Best of luck to you and I hope the rain subsides!

Well we ended up at Cade's Cove today, not much activity since it was raining but it was still beautiful. Seen lots of deer. Tomorrow we are headed back to Cades Cove really early then headed to Roaring Forks.
Thanks again for the tips!

Oh, how I wish I was in Tennessee today! (again, even in the rain) :)

Cades Cove is a great place to visit, as you already know. Typically, there's lots of wildlife and there's always an abundance of beautiful views. Did you happen to see any mama bears and cubs feasting at the top of the cherry trees? They are always good for a show (and for falling branches). Here are a few random shots I've taken in Cades Cove...
