I ALWAYS used to position myslef with the sun in players faces, however lately I find myself going for backlit images. I just got SO tired of the dark eyes and harsh shadows of direct light... thoughts anyone? C&C welcome

Nice pics. #5 may be a bit hot.

I always shoot at whatever side my sons team is facing. So one half I shoot into the sun, one half away from it.

I did the same thing last game Matt, although I wasn't super happy with them. Seemed like I had a hard time getting good focus. Very nice.

Do you find you have to adjust the skin tone
because the light is primarily reflecting off the green turf?

Sun? Don't have to worry about that until next spring round here! Getting some really good backlit shots ought to give you something different that most parents can't get easily. Nice job Matt

I think as long as the faces are exposed then the back-lit can be better I think than the oompa loompa face look

Except #1, the rest seem to be sidelit. Great captures as alsways. I have a few Qs, How did you meter for these shots? Did you adjust EV in camera? RAW or JPEG? If JPEG, did you adjust in-camera contrast, etc?
Thanks

Here's a tidbit for those with Mark III's when shooting backlit - YMMV but this is what I do - in custom functions set you camera up so that -

when you use spot metering (eg. backlit shooting) the metering spot is linked to the focus point (eg. usually the spot metering is linked to the center point). Now when you focus on the face your metering the face. ;)

Thanks!

I dont "meter" for the shots. Just take a few test shots and check the histogram... I always shoot RAW so contrast is done in post. I almost always shoot M so there is no EV for these, the few times I do shoot Av I do use EV to help as needed.
