I got a new 7d last week and haven't had a ton of chances to actually use it so I took some photos of Ash in the backyard when I got home from work. Although it was a nice sunny day by the time I got home the light was fading.

I'm still getting used to the 7d but so far I'm really liking it. I can't wait until I dial in everything for the way I like to shoot :)

I happen to like this image for a few reasons mostly, the beautiful dog almost looks fake coming right at you with all that color .I like it.I also like the background is a bit imperfect, it goes well with the pups coat all that color and make's it a giant distraction. Most people would say too much for the eyes blah, blah, blah, I like it ... my two cents

Wow, a bit late to the party here maybe, but I love this shot. As an Aussie (and dog in general...) owner, I know just how hard that shot is to achieve.

Is this auto focus? I can never get my camera to focus quick enough, especially with something like f/2.8. Tips? Does the 70-200 make this shot easier than my 28-135 (I mean... obviously, but do you feel like this can be achieved without the 70-200)? I always try to go with center focus point, AI-servo on my 30D.

Hi Kuzco,
Honestly I don't know anything about the 28-135 or the 30d :( I got into Canon because I started shooting dog agility on the side (my wife runs Ash in agility trials and I caught on as an occasional trial photographer) so I don't have a ton of experience shooting this type of thing with any other lens then the 70-200 and 40d (and now 7d).

Those settings you mentioned are what I use on the 40d (AI Servo, center focus point). I'm sure some other members could comment on what you should be able to achieve :)

Awesome, thanks for the reply! I'm slowly saving towards the 70-200... can't wait :)
