Thomas Shahan's work in macro photography is remarkable.

You can view his work by CLICKING RIGHT HERE. (external link)

He was on NBC's Today show and the video of his appearance can be seen here: http://today.msnbc.msn.com …4891/vp/33447562#33447562 (external link)

He is interviewed here: http://photograview.com …mas-opo-shahan-interview/ (external link)

What do you think?

Please proceed, Governor.

I don't know about king but he is certainly very very good. His lighting is so soft and natural. Here is his rig:

Perhaps in addition to paper towel that diffuser contains a bit of magic?

top notch for sure, nice to see Pentax being used instead of boring old C & N;) You can actually buy an old bellows head lens rather than reversing a prime but probably no better than what he is getting.

His shots are pretty awesome. However, I say put him in an insect filled garden with LordV, GOLDENORFE, and racketman and I would expect nothing but extraordinary from every picture I saw. Just because they haven't been interviewed on NBC doesn't make them any less "Kings of Macro" as they will always be in my eyes.

I think is a positive thing someone of insect macro community to have the opportunity to advertise the hobby of insect photography to a large audience. A great deal of information in the 1:45 minutes of interview, talked fast but clear.

Insect photos are not a big business and I don't know about anyone making real money from them, is a truly enthusiast environment with no objective parameters to classify one work above others. Is a great thing because everyone share setups and insect macro techniques, Thomas Shahan shared his technique and equipment with us and not declared himself better than other macro mates, I'm glad to see him talking about it.

Is very different of a car race where someone clearly end in first place someone clearly in second and so on.

I agree all have different style and his photos excell in good lighting and a worth effort to find the more beauty insects and shoot them in a environment wich do justice to beauty.

The only flag about the interview, most funny than bad, is that I wondered how much % of the NBC audience understanded the sentence " a prime on backwards extension tubes...."

he certainly got some good shots, but i wouldnt say the best, Some of Brian stuff is better! Also he doesn't have a huge range of bugs alot of his shots are of similar insects! what can get boring well for me anyway.

There may be some people that can shoot as good as him,but his macro will take some beating. In my opinion, but it is just my opinion.Looking at some of the other threads,I am a bit late with this thread, about 3years.thanks.

When I at first saw his work I really couldn't beleive how much detail he packed in one photo.

Saving up for a new camera.
