Hello new to the forums.

I am considering to buy the Impact two monolight kit (120 VAC). I would like to know if the strobes would fire when I use it together with my 430ex II or pop-up flash since I have used my friends bowens and aliens and their strobes would fire whenever I use my flash. My camera is Canon XS and It doesn't have a sync cord slot.

Or do I need to buy a sync cord that attaches to the hotshoe to make the strobes fire.

Second question is that are the Impact monolight kit worth it for a beginner like me trying to set-up a small studio.

Thanks in advance!:)

You dont want to use the popup for two reasons. The first is that the popup uses ettl, which emits a preflash before the flash fires to calculate exposure. This preflash will set off the lights. I dont know whether you can turn off that preflash in the xs, but even if you could you would have the issue of hard light coming from your camera aimed at your subject, sort of defeating the idea of off camera flash.

You have two options. One is a hotshoe adapter like the wein safe sync, or another brand which will allow you to attach a pc sync cable to your hotshoe, or a set of radio triggers. I'd suggest the radio triggers as they will remove cables from the equation and arent that much more than the hotshoe adapters.

Thanks for your reply! What about using my canon 430exii pointing to the ceiling? It will not emit preflash. Will it work that way?

You can use the 430EX to trigger the strobes. You have to use it in manual mode (not E-TTL). On low power it should work well without affecting the lighting.

I have in the past done that exact same thing when I couldn't persuade my PC cords to work. 430EX set to lowest power pointed right at the optical slave of one of my strobes, and the light from it triggering the optical slave of the other strobe. I couldn't bounce the 430 since I was in a gym and anything with enough power to bounce would affect the picture.
