This is currently offered at $130 from buy.com.... Does anyone have experience with this tripod ? Is this a steal or just a good price? Thanx...

I think the 540 or 530 would both be a very good choice as a travel tripod .... dump the panhead (keep for special use or a video camera), and add a small light ballhead (I chose Adorama's smallest Flashpoint unit).

I got mine (530) for $199 CDN at a Best Buy in Canada. Another correspondent got his fro $99 at a US Best Buy.

This acts as my travel tripod. Light, rigid, well-made, and at that price a bargain. If I sold one of my two units (Velbon or Giottos), I would keep the Velbon. I use it more.

The 540 has four section legs as opposed to the 530's three section legs. This allows it to fold into a shorter package. The disadvantage may be a slight decrease in rigidity, but I doubt if that would be reason to turn it down.

I keep considering something like this just for simple use. I don't use a tripod much other than including my self in a decent photo of me and my g/f or family because if not, I'm just never in photos. My current tripod is nice, but heavy and big. It's annoying to carry around. Only ever be my 40D and 18-50 on it. Think it'd fair well?

Just food for thought, you can get a Manfrotto 190xb and a Manfrotto ball head from B&H for just a bit more than this price. A good comparison should be done as Manfrotto is alot of tripod for the money. I had the 190xb and it was very nice. I upgraded recently to the 055xprob, but the 190xb is a nice tripod for the money and lightweight as well (like 3.7 lbs). Big bang for the buck. Manfrotto has many ball heads to choose from. I have the 488RC2 and love it. Nice beefy head and supports my 40D and 100-400 very well. I also have the Manfrotto 322 pistol grip head and it is very nice as well. Very cool head in fact. Just saying, shop around a bit as there are lots of great tripods/heads to choose from.

Hi Aravena

I put a 40D/50D with 70-200 f/4 L IS and 1.4X Kenko TC on mine, with excellent results.

Where did you see it at Buy.com for $130? The cheapest they show is $300 (from Adorama). $130 is both a steal and a good price.

OK - I see they say sold out and I saw a link to it elsewhere, noting that it was a limited time offer at $124.99.

I ordered one and it showed up today. Nice tripod - sturdy - at a great price. I'll use a ball head in lieu of the pan head supplied with it.

SORRY FOR THE CAPS FOLKS, I JUST HAD SURGERY ON MY RIGHT HAND AND AM TYPING LEFTY....

THE TINY FLASHPOINT F-1 ARCA COMPATIBLE BALL HEAD IS ONE HECK OF A UNIT. IT WEIGHS NEXT TO NOTHING BUT, WILL SUPPORT MY 40D WITH 70-200MM F/4L IS LENS. I USE IT ON MY TRAVEL TRIPOD. HOWEVER FOR MORE GENERAL USE, I WOULD SELECT THE SOMEWHAT LARGER F-2 HEAD. FLASHPOINT IS A HOUSE BRAND OF ADORAMA.
