Hey all,

I'm a little confused about the raw setting in my camera. When shooting raw, doe the Picture Style parameters have any affect on the raw image? Someone on the forum said they do not.

In my Rebel XT you could set sharpness, contrast, saturation, etc. and they would apply to the raw files as well. Help!

BTW, I always shoot raw.

The PictureStyle does NOT affect the raw data, but is saved within the raw file as metadata, and becomes the "As Shot" style when you open the raw file in DPP.

.

They would only affect the "As Shot" settings in DPP. You are free to change them after the fact.

EDIT - They WILL affect the embedded JPG preview.

The main effect will be in the image displayed on the LCD and the histogram. I've seen the recommendation a number of times to use low contrast and saturation settings even when shooting RAW so that the histogram in the LCD will be closer to the "real" histogram of the RAW image.

Some Canon stuff and a little bit of Yongnuo.

If you are interested in getting the most out of your RAW, then this is indeed the only way to do it.

Picture style works the same on all Canon cameras, it affects the Jpeg. Think of it more as "processing style" and you will be nearer the mark.

Neutral is the best setting for picture style unless you want to do no PP work at all - any other setting will have effects on the histogram and possibly encourage settings which might cause channels to be clipped.

Thanks for the explanations everyone. Really answered a lot of questions I was having. I guess I'm on the right path as I shoot in RAW with Neutral Pic Style settings.

The XT does not have Picture Styles, but those parameters definitely do not apply to RAW files.
