Just started with Nik Sharpener Pro 3.0 in Elements 7.

What printer resolution do I use in Sharpener 3.0 for Photo, and Best Photo? Can't find anything in the manual ... probably looking in the wrong place ..

For the R1900 'Photo' is 720 dpi and 'Best Photo' is 1440 dpi. I expect the R1800 is the same.

Sharpener 3 asks for both a horizontal and a vertical pixel count .....

I recently searched for that same info for the Epson 2400 and I found a recommendation to use 1440 x 1440. I don't have the source right now. I also found 1200 x 1200 for my HP B8350.

I think the info was found in one of the NIK video webinars (external link).

A good review:

Thanks Chas. Strange how this information is not readily available on the Epson site ...

Seems odd to need the printer maximum. I use a plug-in sharpener from Pixel Genius and sharpen using the ppi that I am going to print at. The amount of final "output" sharpening is dependent on the size of the print and its ppi, not the theoretical maximum dpi of the printer.

My R2880 has a theoretical dpi of 2880 x 1440. Thats simply 360dpi per cartridge (8 carts) in one direction by 180 dpi in the other. Its theoretical because the printer may not utilise all the cartridges all the time.

That's a difference between Pixel Genius and NIK... The Nik Sharpener automatically senses the print size and calculates the average viewing distance. In rare cases the size can be entered manually.

On my HP B8350, 1200x1200 is NOT the printer maximum, but the standard quality photo setting, called "Best". Maximum photo print quality is actually called "Maximum" and is 4800x1200. The "native" file print resolution is 600dpi.

According to Page 29 of the User Guide for the Epson R1800 (external link):
Photo - 1440x720dpi
Best Photo - 1440x1440dpi
Photo RPM - 5760x1440dpi

Chas,

Now thats clever! So does it ask for print size at some stage? It surely cannot wait until you send the print to the printer driver because then you'd not know how the sharpening affected the image?

Sorry, but I'm a curious soul!

Chas,

It automatically reads the image size and ppi resolution from the hosting application (PS, LR) and does its voodoo from that. You can see the size and resolution displayed in one corner of the UI. For printing, just like PG, the image will look uncomfortably "crunchy" on the screen, but will print beautifully.

More about viewing distance-- It uses standardized calculations of viewing distance based on the diagonal dimension of the print. A case where that might vary is if you had a very large print displayed in a narrow hallway, forcing you to view at a closer than normal distance. That would be a situation where you would enter the viewing distance in feet, inches, meters, etc.

Hi Chas,

How embarrassing! My answer was on page 29 OF THE MANUAL.

How often have I heard the phrase, "RTFM?"

Obviously, not enough!

Thanks for the help Chas.

You should watch some of those videos and webinars on the NIK website. I'm getting so much more from the NIK products now.

Again-- It's pure coincidence that I happened to be searching for this exact same info recently. I was just guessing at the numbers to use in Sharpener Pro and was using the wrong print sharpening settings.

Chas,

Thank you for the explanation. Its interesting to see how different developers minds work in so completely different ways.
