Canon Prime lens updates?

As I'm converting to fixed focal lengths, I need to hook myself up with a few new lenses.

The recently updated 24L is very tempting and so is the 135L..

But.. I'm afraid that Canon will be updating many of their older primes(such as the 135) aswell with UD elements and their new SWC coating, which would leave me with newly purchased lenses worth nothing.

What do you think? Wouldn't it be logical to update their older primes at this time?

Kind regards,

Ebbe

Worth nothing? How exactly does that work? When Canon releases a new lens they send a radio signal worldwide and when the lenses receive the signal they self destruct? Or is it the cameras that receive the signal and they refuse to function with an old lens?

A lens that provides excellent results today will still produce equally excellent results tomorrow regardless of whether or not it is the latest version of the lens. What you should be considering is the "opportunity cost" of waiting. How many good shots are you missing because you are afraid to buy the better glass? The resale value may not be as high but to say they would be worth nothing is an extreme exaggeration.

- Yes, of course they will.

- I think we agree, but if a lens such as the 135mm gets a decent update I would want to upgrade. 'Worth nothing' is of course a slight exaggeration ;), but what I meant was that it's resale value wouldn't be as high as now.

You need to go look through the "Sell" forum and see just how well all "L" lenses are holding their value.

Then .. Go Shopping and get the glass you want.

Like Ken said: Paralisys by Analisys is costing you time and images.

Think of it as renting the lens for a couple years until a new one comes along.

The most recent example: The older 24L hasn't really lost much of it's value. Mainly because the new one is priced higher.

I'll bet that is a continuing trend!

You won't regret getting the 135/2... It's a really nice lens on FF. It would be nice if it had IS for use on crop sensor cameras... But it's hard to imagine any other improvements... And IS would add weight, size, cost and complexity.

Personally I think the 24/1.4 II is way, way overpriced. Big and heavy, too. I wish the 24/2.8 would get updated to USM, perhaps some optical tweaking and build more similar to the 28/1.8. But I might just pick up a decent used copy of it anyway.

It's sometimes true that lenses lose value when a new model is introduced. Other times not so much. The new 100L Macro H-IS is another example... It's so much more expensive that prices of used 100/2.8 USM haven't really gone down much.... Are actually only slightly less than what I paid for mine new some years ago.

Still, even if it happens that a new model comes out and the values of the older version drop significantly... What about all the photos you didn't make while waiting to see if something new might be introduced?

Have fun and be proud that with each and every purchase you are doing your part to help re-invigorate the global economy!
