Would you sell both and get a 1DMKIII?
I like the idea of having 2 cameras but the 1DMKIII is a nice step up.

I've been toying with the idea of selling my 5D and going with the 1DIII, but I think I'm leaning towards simply adding a 1DII or 1DIIN, if the prices come down. Tough to beat the image quality of the 5D Classic.

Is what you gain with the 1DIII over the 1DII more than what you lose without having the 5D?

Do you get paid to shoot? If yes, then no. Don't trade. Do you go above ISO 800? If no, then no, don't trade.

The 1D Mark III has some IQ that's really close to the 5D. It's great. If I could only have one body, it would be the Mark III. That being said though, I repurchased a 5D once after selling one. I also went back to a Mark III after selling one.

The two cameras are so good, they're hard to be without! The advantages of having a backup camera should never be overlooked though. If you don't get paid to shoot though, grab a G10 for a back up, grab a Mark III and call it good!

Thanks for the reply and that's a great question. A $2300 question infact and I can't even answer it.

I love the IQ from the 5D and couple it with the 85 and 135, it's a great system. For the 1DMKII, I mostly use it during daytime either for sports or events with long lenses and honestly with this type of shooting, I'm not sure if I will gain that much with the 1DMKIII.

One area of the 1DMKIII I like is the high ISO but the 5D is not bad in that part either...so I'm loosing hair. :(

Maybe I just want a newer camera. :o

It sounds like you won't gain anything and you have a touch of GAS. Which is ok, happens to me all the time!
The tough part is, they are all great cameras. You can't lose. The 85 and 135 on the Mark III are not what they are on the 5D though. I say keep the 5D, ditch the Mark II and grab a Mark III used.

Usually I don't get paid but lately I'm toying with the idea of start charging people for it :D

I've seen your upgrade/downgrade path through the years Mike and you're one of my hero ;).

I hear you that for 1 camera, the MKIII is THE one.

HAHAHA!
Yeah, I've got issues with GAS for sure. It's pretty sad actually! But hopefully over for now. Nothin' but the 300 2.8IS on the wish list and maybe by then it'll be a 6k lens and out of my reach.

Actually speaking of the Mark III. Wait till the Mark IV is released, just a little bit longer. I'm willing to bet the price will go below 2k for that body. Which sucks, I think I paid 2500 for my used mark IIn.

There's no way I'd do that... you have the 1-series body with arguably the best AF in existence + an excellent IQ & high ISO body. You would gain very, very little by moving to a lone mkIII yet lose a body, FF, and perhaps a touch of AF accuracy.

The LOGICAL decision, without a doubt, is to keep what you have.

Also add to the list a much lighter camera option with the 5D for times when you don't want to carry a brick with you.

I've owned all 3, but being a hobbyist on somewhat of a budget, I only keep 1 body at a time and which one I own usually has to do with what I'm most interested in at the time (landscape, birding, etc..). If I only needed/wanted 1 body and could afford any of the 3, I'd have a 1D3 for sure. The most versatile answer is the one you currently have: 5D is a great full frame with great iq for wide angle and portraits, and 1D2 is a great machine gun with excellent AF for sports and birds/wildlife. If you wanted to mix the 2, you have the 1D3 which performs well in just about any situation, plus you get great high iso performance and all its updated features (which should not be overlooked). You're in a no lose situation, if I were on a $2300-2400 budget, my choice would be:

1 body - 1D3
2 bodies - 1D2 + 5D

My plan is to keep using my 5D until the 1D4 hits the stores, then see what happens to the used 1D3 market. If it falls enough, I may HAVE TO sell my 5D and pick up a 1D3! haha! Have fun whatever you do!
