2 580ex ii's - one directly in front of the car and the other on the side a little in front of the rear wheel.

lots of great advice

Thank you. I thought perhaps it was a height issue. I brought my manfrotto minis along; this next time I will bring my 13 footers. I definitely had room to boost the power and room to open up my aperture a little.

The point is, a car is a huge reflective surface that you don't want to light directly.

That's what I was trying to do, create a huge "window" of light on the ground in front of the car. Cool. I suppose my Flash-to-Subject distance was to small.

Thanks again.

My first time posting one of these strobist setup posts. Enjoy!
(P.S.: A few people here don't post their setups, just the final result, imo it kills the purpose of this thread)

great pics and example of what should be posted!

the posters such as the one above you should re edit or have pictures removed.

Looks like it was light painted and not a strobe, so on both accounts! haha

Don't try to confuse me with the facts, my mind is already made up.

But yeah, his picture is pretty self explanatory. You can tell where the light painting line went through on the picture. It's good enough for me lol.

Been following this thread forever. Finally got me a couple sets of Yongnuo RF-603c's
I have never strobed a car while shooting it before. Now that I have my wireless triggers I am going to do this more often.

It was rainy today, and it stopped for a bit so I ran out side with my 30D with my 10-20 on it, and two of my speedlights on stands. Decided I would try to shoot my car with strobes lol

Bounced the light off of the wet pavement onto the car. Both were set to 1/4 power and it was still decently bright out.

What do you guys think for a first timer? I have learned alot from all of you, and put it to action.

Finished product

For being first timer, damn good buddy keep it up. Typically when i've shot strobes with cars you want your stands to be above roof line and aimed down. This actually cast very smooth lighting throughout the paint. If you notice when you bounce you almost have a light fall off at the pillars up to the roof. Now the car being white its actually going to naturally spread the light for you. Also when the stands are higher than roof line and aimed down it creates a nice light halo on the ground adding some contrast to the pavement as well. Over-all awesome shot and perfect cloudy day to do it!

Thanks!! Yeah I haven't had the cash for stands yet, so I rigged up a few old tripods to use as stands for now haha. I see what you mean, next time I will keep them up high and aim them down. Thank you! :) Like I said total noob haha It will be fun to learn though.

If you go B+H photo video they have Impact brand lights stands for as low as $19.99, i actually use thier $32.00 stand which ive had over a year now. Not the best quality but they've lasted tons of shoots. So when you can take a gander at them. No reason to spend 100's on a stand for speedlights.
