Great job editing turning it into a great photo.. Is that a strobe or constant light source of some kind.

And tricks to blending... did you use layer masks and just try to blend each layer or did you use some sort of blend mode or other method

It was a strobe. Canon 430EXII with a handheld 50x70cm Softbox.
Both, in editing. Created layermasks, mask certain parts out/in, edit opacity. Many layers, at the end you'll be having something like this: http://www.abload.de/img/riggiqik7h.jpg (external link) lot of training for getting a view for shadows and highlights, still working on a perfect method ;)

/\/\ is that a delorian? I love those cars, and that brushed stainless must have added some new challenges to the shoot. did it show hotspots better or worse than a glossy finish?

jap, it is. working on some shots. maybe toughest edit ever :D still easier then retouching reflections on a black glossy car, but the light itself breaks on the car like there's a rainbow every 10inches. a first try: http://www.abload.de/img/v4msuhs.jpg (external link)

Been a while.. thought I'd throw something up.

Pretty standard 3 light setup, with Elinchrom gear to battle the sun.

The unit is an Elinchrom Ranger RX Speed AS, with 'A' Heads. The 3rd light is a Canon Speedlight 580EXII

not that bad, you just need to get a little closer to the body of the car and burn your pic. lessen the halo effect.

Good idea, I'd suggest Keeping some of the color in the reflection too.

I everyone. I have been lurking for a very long time. I finally got a chance to try my hand at some flash work. Before I carry on though...what exactly is the difference between strobe and flash? Is it only "strobist" if one uses Strobe lighting? If so then maybe this post does not belong here in which case I do apologize. We went out the other evening an shot this Toyota Wagon.

This shot and the others in the set were taken with one Yongnuo 560 flash mounted on a tripod. We moved the flash around illuminated various parts of the scene and then layered and blended in photoshop. Below is a partial set-up shot of the above image.

You can see my colleague Basheer holding up the flash on the left hand side there and also the flash on the right hand side. There were about 8 exposures in total for the final image where Basheer illuminated the models individually but I could not include those in the set-up image successfully. You get the idea though. Basically we moved around the scene until it was all lit.

This was my first time so I truly welcome any c&c. The restof the set can be found here. http://boostsa.co.za/blog/toyota-1-6-gle-wagon (external link)

I will be the first to admit that I need some more practice in ps with dodging and burning. Also I realized that there are quite a few images where I did not get certain parts of the car evenly lit wit the flash. I need to work on that.

Thanks for looking everyone.

I wish I had a set-up shot for this one, but it's basically the same idea just both brella's shoved against the doors.
