Used a speedlight, shot through and umbrella in various positions and angles. Combined the exposures I need in post to fine tune the light and came up with the final piece. 18 layers of light alone in PS, without any other adjustment layers.

Hi all :)

I'm amazed by the work being posted here, makes me a little nervous posting my first ever flash-lit car shot ... but here goes :)

IMAGE: http://www.horizonimaging.co.uk/misc/potn/two_skodas_final.jpg

Here's the shot straight out of the camera before any post-processing:

IMAGE: http://www.horizonimaging.co.uk/misc/potn/two_skodas_out_of_camera.jpg

and here's the setup shot:

IMAGE: http://www.horizonimaging.co.uk/misc/potn/two_skodas_setup.jpg

I used the following equipment:

- Canon 7D
- 17-55mm F2.8 IS with circular polariser to remove the window reflections
- 2x Canon 430EX II flashguns (direct)
- 1x Canon 430EX flashgun (direct)
- Phottix Stratos II wireless triggers

Post processing included:

- Darkening and desaturating everything except the cars
- Cloning out distracting highlights in the background
- Darkening the corners
- Boosting the contrast
- Selectively brightening dark areas of the cars

Any feedback would be much appreciated!

David :)

PS. I know, the cars weren't washed, I was more interested in experimenting with the lighting ;)

PPS. Here is another shot from the same session. I think I had one flash on the camera, one to the left of the camera about head-height, and one on the right about 3 metres up (you can just see the reflections underneath the left headlight).

I've also just been experimenting with interior shots ... my Dad is selling this car to a friend, so it's been an ideal test case for practicing my photography :)

IMAGE: http://www.horizonimaging.co.uk/misc/potn/skoda_interior_at_night.jpg

Same camera as the previous shot, but with a Canon 10-22mm lens at 10mm. I used a 10 second exposure at f/10 and ISO 100. I then used my 430EX II at 1/2 power and 35mm zoom, and bounced it 4 times off the grey ceiling fabric, one pop on either side of the passenger and driver's headrests.

Post processing included:

- Removing dust spots caused by dust on the lens filter which were illuminated by the nearby flashgun
- Removing scuffs and marks from the upholstery
- Darkening / blacking out the side windows (but just leaving a hint of the wing-mirrors)
- Darkening / blacking out the rear-view mirror

Feedback much appreciated as always!

Many thanks,

David :)

Hi Tony,

This is really amazing work. Can you please elaborate on how you mixed the layers in PS? Do you start off with all but one of the layers completely masked off (masks entirely black), and then add in the lighted areas you want by painting onto the respective masks in white / grey? What blending mode do you use for all the different layers?

Many thanks!

David :)

I'm so bad at merging numerous photos with flash. Anyone have a good youtube video or something that to help? I always have a horrible overlay that I have no idea how to make look correct.

That's the way that I would do it, in Normal Mode. Then I would cycle through some blending modes to see if there was an improvement. Shift + Alt + +/-

Use layer blending mode as "lighten", you should have good results with it. After use masks to remove unnecessary items

Yup spot on.

I used different layers for different sections of light and masking to help with that.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated :)

It's probably a silly question, but is there any way of using layering to increase the apparent brightness of flashes outdoors? In particular if you're already at your flash's sync speed and you can't darken the ambient light any more?

Many thanks,

David
