In simple Terms it tells how powerful a flash is. When comparing flashes I usually look at the GN to compare power output.

^ should be fine. I have the 2nd Gen 460 and haven't had to use them at full power for autoshoots.

Here is pretty much the only strobist action I have done to date as it was my first and only try yet. The first image is three sperate photos merged onto one canvas showing the three used to create the final image. The final image is the second photo.

Technique: I used a 30 second exposure with my D5000, and used a SB600 on full power for the flash. I set the timer on the camera to 2 sec delay so there would be no camera shake. As soon as I heard the camera go, I popped off 2-3 flashes in a specific section of the car (Left side, Right side, Front) during each exposure. The result is the three images you see on the top. I held the flash maybe 5 feet from the car and manually triggered it with the button on back.

Footnote: Now that I have a remote, I would just put it on "Bulb" and do it all at once.

Post Proccessing: As for putting the final image together, all I did was stack all three images on top of eachother. Then I used "Blending options" on each layer, and chose the blend mode "Lighten". After simply using the standard lighten settings, the image came out pretty much as shown. All I did was cover up a single flash burst shown in the upper right hand corner, and then used "Auto color" and "Auto Contrast". I then went and manually upped the contrast slider to either 10 or 20 (Dont remember) and upped the brightness to 5. Last I sharpened the image minimally by using the regular "sharpen" technique.

I like both the real color of the final photo and the "cool blue" tone that they were originally from the flashes. As well, I am not happy about the spots on the car from the flash being so close. But while taking the photo, any furthur away and it became to dim for my liking. My guess is that it was set to f29 and taking a large burst of light to even show up. Next time I will play around with my aperature to try and keep the flash furthur away from the car.

Let me know if you have any questions. Oh, and the car was extremely dirty and grimy. Not my car and this was an impromptu photoshoot. This is not meant as a glamour shot, just a teaching tool for those who want to try it.

looks okay. The only crap thing about using one flash, the lights aren't even on the ground.

When using 3 flashes. do u direct the lights at the car or do u aim at the ground?

Thanks, I wanted the tunnel as a framing element, I felt the plain wall would have been a tad boring.

Here's my latest::
