Thanks, the spot was honestly chosen in about 30 seconds and was like 300ft from where I meet the cars owner...kind of a met in one parking lot, eh lets shoot in the one next to us kinda thing, haha.

Any suggestions for lighting the car better?

btw, first shot is a composite shot with a couple of bare B800's, second is the same but mixed some shots of it bare with some using a 5ft octa., third I laid a sheet over the car, shot through the sheet for some softer more omnipresent light then shot a frame for the background.

The interior shot. try getting one bee for high and one for low, BTW is that your subaru?

Don't try to confuse me with the facts, my mind is already made up.

Not quite a sunset, but a Speedlite with Full CTO gel outside the driver's window. A second 430EX with 1/4 CTO Gel inside the car bounced on a very low power for fill

Keep meaning to shoot more automotive work, so I guess this is a good place to start! :)

This is sick. Index to get some gels lol.

how would you setup or shoot one low ?doors open in softbox? pop a frame with more power so it doesn't fall off before and do a composite with one exposed for dash and one for the floor?

and nope, that was just a random subaru behind these buildings.

They are all composites, so you would only see a single panel lit per frame.

It looks like the dash is lit well with the sun I would open the door on the side you are on and maybe softbox but probably just bare flash. I would try for one shot but probably end up using 2-3. One bounced off the head liner one with the door open getting the floor boards one getting the other stuff one getting door card or what ever i wanted the viewer to look at/highlight. Right now it is the golf ball shifter.

Another trick to not get the BG is put a white cloth over the windshield and strobe that. A big soft box and it takes the BG out :)

I actually did toss a sheet over the car for the civic interior shot, I'll have to try again and just grab a few exposures to get some for th floor.

Amazing thread! This inspires me enough to look more into doing off camera flash for my ride. One question I have is if anyone is using the 7D built-in wireless flash for the trigger and how well that works with, say, two slave flashes?

There is no reason it shouldn't work... especially at night.

Another shot....

I had a strobe aimed at the camera left wall, another on camera right aimed at the roof to illuminate the bonnet and front end. Then on various shots I mixed it up in places with speedlights here and there. So since the car is quite reflective, by illuminating the reflections directly, it would illuminate the car, and of course some of that light will be bouncing off the walls and lighting the car anyway.

Sorry about the model, I dont have one of JUST the car handy...
This was half lit by the sun and half flash. You can probably see the slight difference in colour temperature. The second head is up high aimed down at the bonnet, and the octa was giving a bit of fill to the car, but mostly there to light the model. Once the sun set, I added a speedlight to camera right to light that side of the car. Placed it on the floor and moved it around a little so the hot spot didnt show.

Theres a few more photos and a full explanation into this photoshoot if your interested at http://www.brodiebutler.com …erth-street-car-magazine/ (external link)

ahhh good deal then. yeah an easy way is just to have a speedlight under the seat do it, but I use a strobe and open the door.
