Easy test: Shoot an evenly lit blank surface - wall, paper, even a clear blue sky. Color doesn't matter, or focus for that matter. Set the exposure mode to P or if Av be sure the Exposure Compensation is set to 0. Now look at the camera's review histogram. You will see a sharp spike which should be a bit to the left of center - on a scale of 0 - 100 it should be at 40 or 45. If it is further to the left, the camera is underexposing. If it passes this test, your metering technique is probably at fault.

Cameras don't under expose, the photographer does that. Cameras are designed to expose for a neutral scene and certain colors dominating the scene can greatly throw off the exposure such as white and black.

I suggest learning to use exposure compensation on your 50D, which means not using full auto mode. Start by using P mode. And I suggest getting the book by Bryan Peterson: Understanding Exposure.

Good luck.

I do shoot in 'P' Mode and have had my camera looked at since, which it was found there was a probelm with it within the camera, since having it fixed, there has been no further issues, with the photos looking under exposed.

tzalman: Thanks for you help, I have since tried this numerous times just to keep check now.

Thanks Guys
Kathryn
