I am looking at buying one of these options for a boom & stand.

It says that the load limit is 13/15 pounds with the boom fully extended.
Does that include the weight of the counter weight?

I plan on putting an AB800 with either a beauty dish or barn doors on it. I figure that weighs about 6+ lbs. When I add the counter weight of 11 pounds, I am already over the boom arms load limit. Do I need 11 lbs of counter weight?

Can someone help me out with this?

Also, if the counter weight is not part of the booms load limit, is there a cheaper alternative? I would like one that either comes with wheels or able to accept wheels.
I do not plan on putting any more on the arm than I mentioned.

Thanks, Kath

The Manfrotto 085BS comes with a 15-lb iron counterweight. The load specification does not include the counterweight, but only the "working end" load on the boom. The counterweight does, of course, add real weight to the whole rig. That's why the stand that comes with the kit is rated at over 60 lbs.

Yes, you will need the full 15 pounds of counterweight. You place it in a position to balance the boom. That means that, with a six pound working load, the counterweight will be closer to the pivot than the lighting equipment will be. The heavier your working load, the counterweight will be further out from the pivot. ALWAYS balance the boom by properly positioning the counterweight.

You cannot go wrong with the 085BS kit. I have a slightly older version of that and it's a fantastic piece of equipment. You can see detailed photos of my rig in this thread.

I have the Bogen one you posted and like it a lot...

-Mario

EDIT: Just a note that the Bogen one is not the easiest to be portable due to the weight and that it doesn't fully collapse with the casters installed...

Guys question, for something like just AB800 with beauty dish, wouldn't something simpler than the above mentioned bogen heavy duty boom and stand work?

Something like this

Fuji XT-1, 18-55mm
Sony A7rIV, , Tamron 28-200mm, Sigma 40mm f1.4 Art FE, Sony 85mm f1.8 FE, Sigma 105mm f1.4 Art FE
Fuji GFX50s, 23mm f4, 32-64mm, 45mm f2.8, 110mm f2, 120mm f4 macro

Simpler? Sure.

However, I think the Bogen is pretty simple.

Don't confuse simple with cheap though.

The Bogen comes with everything you need except a carry case.

The last thing you want is a strobe with beauty dish come crashing down.

As always, the strobe light end of the boom should be in alignment with a leg in the same direction of the light.
This will keep it more balanced...

mario,

I updated my post. I was looking at something cheaper when I mention simpler based on OP's requirement.

Ahh, I thought it might be the case.

I had one of those Impact convertable booms and it was aweful.
It had problems holding Speedlite's.

There are two threads recently on this same subject.

In them, one person mentioned this:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …ails&Q=&sku=611471&is=REG (external link)

It looks nice, but I honestly can't say how good or not it is.

Perhaps someone will mentioned it.

If I find the other thread links, I will post them...

It appears that B&H has their specs wrong. See Bogen's web page for the 420B (external link) for more details. Look at the specifications very carefully. You'll find that at maximum extension, your flash rig is heavier than the specified capacity.

Again, I strongly recommend the Manfrotto 085BS.

Thanks. I was just going by the specs on B&H.
