Well it's been an eternity since I've been around these parts.
Missed the Canon world, and this Forum even more than you could imagine.
Sold my gear, bought a tie, and I drive 50 miles one way to work, as an engineer.

I am itching for a camera so desperately.

I don't have a budget above $1k to begin with.

I owned the 40D, and it is a very worthy camera.

Never got to sample the 50D, though I had heard many rave reviews about it.

I have browsed discussion after discussion of 40d vs 50d.

But let me put it this way:

- For you 50D owners out there, if I bought a 40D... What are the specific features I'd be missing out from the newer model?

For example, 5 extra megapixels. Is the image quality that much better?
Another example, 12800 ISO. Is the noise level that much better?

I missed my friends in this place entirely too much. I hope you are all doing good and hanging onto your Canon gear. I hope to stick around for good now.

Cheers!..

I've owned the 40D and now the 50D. The extra 5 megapixels make a big difference, and the image quality is better without question. The noise level is not better than the 40D, though I would consider it on par. I try not to go above ISO 1600 on either. If you can get the 50D for $~200 more than the 40D, it's well worth the extra.

welcome back Mario!

i have a 50D now and what made me get it over the 40D is the ability to micro-adjust my lenses. its the best thing since ... well ... sliced bread! :)

considering the extra MP over the 40D, noise is quite controlled as long as you properly expose.

Thanks folks...

Yeah, the difference is about $200-250, this is why I wanted to see what would be better. For what I have read so far, I have not seen a single 40D user regretting the upgrade to 50D.

It might be worth spending the extra cash then...

right now my options are $850 for a 40D with 3k actuations, 4 batts and Grip, or $1050 for a 50D with Grip and only a single battery. Thoughts?

Perfect answer ... agree 100 percent!

If you already have the glass, then the 50d is within your budget. As for a second battery, lenmars are pretty cheap and you can always pick that up at a later time.
