Years ago. I had an EOS10 SLR film camera which was superb.
later in my life I actually abandoned serious photographing and used compact digital camera.
A couple of days ago I received a really generous gift from a couple of friends of ours - 5D mark II. (I said it was a generous gift....)

I would like to use my old set of lenses which were very good when I used the EOS 10 but some seem not to function properly with the new 5DII. I suspect not all lenses are compatible. The main problem is that they do not auto focus.

I know I need to do a lot of reading and experimenting in order to catch up with the digital SLR world, but I thought I'll post a quick question.

My three lenses are:
Sigma 24-70 Aspherical F3.5-5.6. This one actually work smoothly.
Sigma 75-300 DL 1:4-5.6
Sigma 75-300 APO 1:4-5.6

It might be that the lenses just broke down or something.

If I want to have the fixed I need to know whether on principal they should work with the 5DII.

Thanks

Since Sigma had to reverse-engineer Canon's AF system, their implementation isn't perfect and some older lenses do not work on newer bodies. Some can be "rechipped", but I don't know the specifics of models or prices.

Sigma no longer rechip lenses. If it is Sigma and not Ex or EX DG, forget it.

With film lenses sometimes people find they're not ideal on digital bodies anyway as they didn't have coated elements to prevent reflections off the sensor causing a problem.

Sorry to hijack your thread a bit, but regarding Sigma reverse engineering the system - is that also true for Tamron and Tokina? Because I've never heard of their lenses needing to be rechipped for newer bodies. Are Sigma tight arses and not willing to pay for a license/specs? Or have the Tamron/Tokina engineers just done a much better job?

Or maybe they just had better luck.

According to Canon, Canon has never licensed their mount to any company but Kodak. Tamron, Tokina, and Sigma all reverse-engineered the mount. Sigma did a poorer job than Tamron and Tokina.

... back then.

Their modern lenses get it right.

If you just mean that current Sigma lenses work with current EOS bodies, then that was also true "back then".

If you mean that all current Sigma lenses will work with all future EOS bodies, as all EF lenses could be expected to, what is the basis for this claim?
