Here's my first shot at studio lighting (Calumet 200's & umbrella). The pictures are unprocessed other than crop, WB, & minor exposure. CC is greatly appreciated.

#1 - 1 light & umbrella on subject. 1 light on background.

The first two, the light looks like it should be lowered a little. The catch lights are little off. Since havin g alight BG, the BG looks strange. maybe light the BG as well, or use a darker BG. You could also PS it and over expose it.
I love the last shot. Great smiles, and the little boy looks HAPPY. Not to often you see a kid smile or laugh like that for a photo!
Is it a shoot thru umbrella or reflective?

VERY nice first attempt! #2 is adorable. Maybe just a tad overexposed on the white shirt and left side of face. My first attempts had WAY too much light thrown at subjects so I decided to err on the dark side, then bring up the lighting until highlights lost definition then backed it back down 1 notch.

Trial and error. Your first attempts are really close!

What makes the catch lights off? Should they be at a 45 degree angle? I had some trouble getting the background lit evenly.
I was planning on overexposing in PS but didn't get around to it.
My boy is always SMILING & HAPPY. He makes it easy for dad (at least for now).

Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try.

I think the light may have been a little high. As for the BG, I don't think you can evenly light the BG and get the same results on your subjects. I would just make the necessary adjustments in PS for the BG.

Your lucky to have suck a lively boy! I bet he is a ton of fun to goof around with.

I think I'd call those overexposed.

The highlights look blown to me.

I was wondering about my meter. The photos seem a little hot. How can I tell if my meter is out of calibration?
