Help on new lense purchase

Currently I am looking for a new lense for my XTi. Considering I'm a college student I don't have a lot of money, but thankfully Christmas is here so I should be able to get some help buying a new lens

I don't have a lot of money so I'm trying to stay at $600 or less. I know that limits me because of the prices of lenses, but that's all I can do for now.

I like to shoot just about everything, guess I'm looking for an all purpose lense. For instance, I like to shoot car shows, cars at the race track, animals, wildlife, landscape, people and just random things like leaves laying on water, stuff like that.

I really have no idea what to look at, currently I'm looking at the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8. It seems to be a good camera, takes nice photos and from the reviews I've read, for the price its a great buy.

If anyone could possibly steer me in the correct direction of what to buy I'd really appreciate it.

I was looking at that, but for some of the stuff I want to shoot, well most of the stuff, it would be way to close if I remember correctly.

Fair amount of cars are in parking lots, certain spots in older towns I would have to be far away from to capture. Only thing I could find it useful with would be wildlife.

I suggested the 70-200mm because you already have a 18-55mm lens, so I thought it would give you a whole range. If your looking to replace your 18-55mm have a look at the Canon 17-40mm f/4.0L? You can find a used one for under $600.00 or you can buy a brand new one for $714.95 shipped.

i think you could probably get a couple decent lenses for your budget...i'd pair one with a 55-250mm for those wildlife/cars on the track...that'll set you back $200

if you like the range of your kit lens you could look at the tamron 17-50mm f2.8 to replace it...

you can set your kit lens to no lower than 28mm and see if that works for you, or if you'll miss the wide end...if you do not miss the wide end, then you could go with the tamron you were leaning towards...that'd put you at about $500-$600 total...

IMO there are probably better options than the 17-40mm L for a crop body, at least i wouldn't spend my money on it...

Yes, sorry went to sleep earlier. I'm looking for one to replace the 18-55mm.

I really am looking for a 2.8 so I can shoot in lower light or at least a little better in lower light. I've been looking at the 50-250mm for later wildlife stuff, but I'd rather have a smaller one right now.

i'm on the same budget and i'm going with the 17-50 tammy
in the future get a 70-200

17-50 Tammy if 2.8 is a necessity or perhaps a Canon 17-40 f4/L. If you can stretch your budget later on, then Canon 17-55 2.8IS for sure.
