JV football Vista Eagles vs. McClatchy Lions

I just started shooting football games this season. In fact I bought a Canon EOS Rebel XS with a 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS lense to photograph my son's team. I have worked my way up to taking some adequate pictures, but thought it was time to get a few pointers.

Pics are visible to me. #1 is a great capture. Talk about being in the right place at the right time! Perfect exposure, focus and timing. Good job.

Several are examples of mis-focus. Not sure if the body you use has the AI Servo focus mode, but it's a life-saver for keeping focus on the action.

Also, your SS might be a bit low as shown on the sideline hit on #9. Football requires at least 1/500, usually faster if you can get it.

Thanks for the response. I have AI Servo and that is the setting I have been shooting with. The faster Shutter speed makes sense. I shot pic #4 is sport mode and the shutter speed was 1/200.
