this is probably the dumbest question asked ever in this forum, but here it goes:

how in the bloody hell do I adjust the focus, DOF, etc, on the lens when in movie mode?

I was playing with the camera yesterday in movie mode, and tried to zoom in and out and do some DOF/Focus adjustments from subjects in the background to the foreground, and nothing happened! No AutoFocus when zooming in/out, and I had to manually focus the lens.

is there a special mode or something I have to do, or is this the way it is?

Have you read the manual at all?

skimmed thru it.. looks like I have to use manual focus on it, but I was wondering if there was an autofocus feature that you could enable.

You can press the AF-ON button to focus but it won't be for continuous focusing though. And you'll need to set the appropriate live mode to focus without the mirror flipping down and back up again. It's all in the manual in the Live-view chapter.

I don't think movie-mode would ever flip the mirror down to focus. Live view, yes, there's a quick-focus mode which flips the mirror down.

I hope you didn't buy the 7D thinking there was continuous AF in video mode. So far, AFAIK, no dslr's (at least Canon's) have continuous AF. Not the 5d2, not the t1i, not the 7d, and was not listed in the 1d4's specifications.

But if you did, oopsie. :(

Well, now that I think of it, you are absolutely correct. I was thinking Livemode when I posted.

You can actually set the 7D to quick focus (mirror flapping) when using the video mode. What happens when you half-press the trigger or press AF-ON is that the camera will do the mirror flapping if you aren't actually recording any video, but if you are, it will change into live mode AF.

^ Aha! I stand/sit corrected. Just won't flap during recording. But before/after, it still flaps.
