Hi All,

I'm considering purchasing the Alien Bees White Shovel Background Reflector. I'll be taking portraits (1 or 2 people) in a living room environment. My equipment includes 3: B800s, several umbrellas and a medium softbox.

Does anyone have any experience with this product? Would it prove useful?

Thanks.

I have that reflector and only use it for background lighting when using seamless paper. But for a living room environment, I don't think it'd be necessary to use that.

Jerome,

Thanks for the quick reply. Sorry I gave the wrong impression. While the pics will be taken in living rooms, I will be using seamless paper and I'll be using the shovel for lighting the paper. Does the shovel make much of a difference? It look like something that may prove useful.

Thanks again.

if you'll be using this as a background light with backdrop, then yes, i find it useful especially if you don't have enough space to set up background lights on the sides.

I've also seen them used for rimlighting the subject from behind (in close quarters as Jerome stated)...can be quite nice if done properly.

I'm just wondering, what's the difference between this and a gobo?

Gobo is not going to give you the light pattern on the shovel reflector.

Oh, I see. I didn't realize about the pattern.
